I just spent a few days at the IBS (International Builders' Show) in Orlando, Florida. It is always great to get out there and see new ideas in the industry.

One thing that really caught my attention was at the Design Studio, were the trends that local Florida designers are seeing for 2012. The word that I use to sum up their list of trends is 'responsibility'. Responsibility economically and responsibility to the environment.

How does financial responsibility meet design? Well, designers and their clients are choosing timeless colours, combinations of colours and materials that are durable and environmentally friendly. The colour palettes are more tone on tone, the materials we are seeing are either recycled or re purposed or natural. The days of 'disposable' design appear to be over (or at least taking a breather for now). That way clients are not renovating numerous times in order to keep up with trends.

It's my opinion that this trend of responsible design is due in large part to the economic collapse that started in 2008, since that time anyone looking at home improvements is more aware of prices, looks and materials; and showing financial and environmental responsibility.

At the design studio, there didn't seem to be much in the way of new ideas or trends but a return to timeless classics - wood or white cabinets in the bathroom and kitchens, natural stone, tone on tone colour palettes, exterior outdoor living being an extension of the indoor space and exterior facades that are reflective of the existing neighbourhood (even if built new).

Timeless design is always in style and is easy on the pocket book too!

Attention Shoe-aholics!

Diamonds are a girl's best friend but I think shoes are a girl's sole sister.

Just like diamonds they can drastically change an outfit plus they always fit. But how to organize our beautiful collection so we can strut on the catwalk at a moments notice?

Well, here's a chic and easy way to achieve your dream shoe closet.

What do you need:

- a wall space that's large enough to display your most fabulous pairs (don't be shy, express your sense of style with a brightly painted wall or even a wallpapered wall)

- some pieces of lightweight cornice (available at most hardware stores)

-nails and a hammer

- don't forget a level!

*The cornice pieces are spread about 2 feet apart and are adhered with a hammer and nails. You can also display your cute clutches too.

Fashion is a form of art so why not display it?

Bathroom trends for 2012

Now that 2012 is in full swing what are some of the trends will be seeing this year?

Let's start with bathrooms.

The Natural Bath

You will see a trend towards warmth and nature in the bathroom this year. Wood grain tiles, porcelain tiles, use of recycled materials (such as recycled glass counter tops), soothing and calming colour palettes, also the warmth of metal fixtures in Champagne and bronze, weathered wood (such as driftwood) is hot as an accessory and for cabinetry. Wall colours will be minimalist in shades of ivory, or a light tough of green. even accessories will have an organic feel with stone accessories, wood, and natural sponges.

Streamlined and Eco-friendly design

This look is a bit more on the modern side in terms of aesthetics. Very simple and clean. Those dark, heavy vanities are on the outs and instead we are seeing light in both colour and material. Even the plumbing is getting an update, you will see flush drains (that are functional but not a focal point), wall mounted faucets, and chrome will continue to be hot with this look. You will also see a modern take on recycling with a trend toward Ice Stone and Paper Stone - these products are made of recycled glass and mimic the look of a natural stone, they are super durable and very easy to clean.

Colour and tile

This a for someone who really wants some personality in their bathroom. This is for the person who doesn't mind flaunting their stuff! Whether it's the tile floor, shower surround, or back splash or maybe all of the above - eye catching tiles are in the spotlight! Don't be afraid of colour and texture and pattern - there are so many selections for so many tastes. But you can really make incredible impact with the tiles on the marketplace these days. Colour, pattern, texture and shine - yes you can have it all!

Wood floors in the bathroom?

Sounds crazy? Well it's not. The quality of wood planks is so much better than in the past and they can stand up to the challenges in a bathroom. Just let you installer know you are putting wood flooring in the bathroom so they can do a proper install. Something like salvaged barn board is perfect since it is already weathered and it looks great - so full of character ! not sure of wood on the floor? Try introducing it in a vanity or even just a mirror frame. You can accessorize with driftwood (so sculptural and truly unique) or a vase with sticks in a corner. To offset the heaviness of wood add soft elements with your towels and look at a custom shower curtain (keep a vinyl layer for the inside but go to a fabric store and select a fabric or even look at pre-made curtains for a custom shower curtain look). Colour isn't the only way to add warmth to a room - texture can do wonders!

White Hot!!!

Well, we see so much of this colour this season but often it just sticks to the outdoors but why not bring it indoors?
White doesn't have to be sterile and clinical - it can be warm, fresh and hot! there are so many different shades of white - it has range of moods just like any other colour does. White isn't boring it can be exciting but it's all how you put it together.

I personally am a huge fan of light colour and white colour walls and kitchens and bathrooms, why? Because it's is timeless but you can also make it modern, it's clean, crisp and fresh but can also be warm and embracing. White is so versatile!

White walls can really open up a space. This past summer my sister bought a cute home in a very up and coming neighbourhood but the previous owner had chosen a variety of heavy and muddy colours such as a grey-blue, mustard yellow and burgundy. We painted the home one colour and we chose a fabulous shade of white 'fossil' from the Benjamin Moore Affinity Collection. It's is so clean but warm at the same time. The colour truly made her entire home brighter and bigger.

White is chic. Think about the most luxurious boutique hotel...their linens, bedding and towels are always lush and rich in white. It is so soothing, relaxing and clean. Try to take your bedroom or bathroom inspiration from a chic hotel. If you cant achieve the entire look, add a few splashes such as white towels or a white throw blanket.

A white sofa and/or chair is so elegant but can also be modern depending on the style(OK, I know this doesn't work for everyone - parents especially) but this looks fabulous in a condo. It helps to open up and freshen up the space. Adding some colourful, patterned or textured accessories just adds more visual interest and comfort to the living room. White works with every colour so you have a lot of options to choose from.

Layering with shades of white. A few years ago I was decorating a model for a condo in West Wellington Village. The bedroom was small, but the builder was very insistent on having a queen size bed. I decided to layer the bedding with various shades of white - this kept the room looking fresh, rich, elegant and larger. I played with texture and pattern but kept everything in shades of white. The overall look was very attractive and the clients loved the feel of the space.

Just because a colour is timeless doesn't make it boring - it's about how you use it! Sometimes if you want to go in a very modern direction sticking with a classic colour is best because it won't date your room. Be sure with any sample - cabinet, fabric or paint that you test it in the actual space (as light is different everywhere and in every room) to ensure that you are selecting the right white for you!

Winter Curb Appeal

Just because you have decided to sell during the chilly winter months does not mean that you don't need to maintain the curb appeal of your home. Curb appeal matter no matter the season!

So what can you do to make your home look it's best during those sub-zero winter days?

The best thing you can do is tidy up! Make sure to clear the paths, driveways and walkways to your home. The front and back porches should also be clear of ice and snow. Be sure to salt those pathways too!

The next thing is to accessorize. Focus on the front door. A beautiful wreath can make a big difference. You can even add some natural potted planters.

Make could use of your exterior lighting. Keep your exterior lights on to help draw attention to your home - you never know who is driving by. If you have some white lights on your exterior plants or home accents - turn them on! But keep the Christmas themed decor to the holidays only and keep it tasteful.

Although not the exterior, your front entry is a first impression be sure to have an entry that is clear from boots, mittens and the like. Keep it clean and clear!

Curb apeal is for the selling season which is year round.

Hot Trends in Paint for 2012

Well, we already gave you a sneak peek at the hot new colour for 2012 - tangerine tango!

But what are the other hot trends that we will be seeing in 2012?

Paint colour:

Expect to see a wide range of hues this year. Such as earth tones, bright candy inspired colours and lots of blue! some of the favourites: Tea Dance by CIL (a blush, reddish and lively colour) fabulous for any room that needs some life and bounce. Perfect for a bedroom, craft room or office - any space that could use a jolt of energy.

Some calming blues to keep your eye on are by Benjamin Moore - wythe blue, nimbus grey, montpellier, and amethyst shadow, they are modern without being over the top and still classic in that they work beautifully with neutrals. Tired of the grey trend? Then check out these blues. Still cool but refreshing and not gloomy.

Check out Behr's Tea Party collection, inspired by Alice in Wonderland. These colours are playful and add whimsy to any space. This is perfect for a child's room or any space for the young a heart. Check out - queen's tart, minty frosting, violet water, sugar pool, and first peach.

If you are looking to redecorate your daughter's room and she loves that 'princess or ballerina' look, check out Beauti -Tone's 'Japanese blossom'. So elegant and soft, pink but not bubble gum. this would also be stunning in a bathroom, the reflection will make your complexion glow!

When you hear 'earth tones' chances are browns and greens come to mind, but Mother Nature has so much more to offer. Olympic paints and stains have really embraced nature this year and made natural tones feel vibrant and alive. For instance, Indiana Clay is a warm and spicy but soft orange tone that looks so chic and inviting when teamed up with shades of cream. Perfect for a study, family room or a living room.

Looking for something bolder? No problem. SICO has some really great options for you - that offer colour an contrast. They are really spearheading the colour blocking trend by using colours such as Inscrutable sky (think a bold and deep eggplant) and Marjoram (a very light celery tone) in the same room. They are calling this 'colour zones'. So try using the deeper colour to emphasize architecture in your home.

Not sure how to bring these colours into your rooms? Try colour blocking. Yes, just like in fashion, accent walls or accent ceilings or accent pieces in a bold, vibrant colour can be a way to add some real splash into any room. It's great to see colour again and in such an economical format. Paint is so inexpensive and easy to apply (I know we don't often want to under take the task, but the results can really change up your space). Colour your world and make it fabulous - your options are endless!

Trend Alert: New Colour for 2012 is.....

The Panton Colour Institute has just announced that the 'official' hot colour for the year 2012 is....Tangerine Tango.

A Pantonerep describes the colour as "sophisticated yet at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it. Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red and the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy"

Great Christmas Gift Ideas

Well it's a busy time of year - the holiday season! It can be expensive and stressful too. I find an early start is a great way to keep the stress low but if you can't do that (time or finances perhaps) think about gift ideas in advance and don't for get to get creative!!

I've started my shopping and I'm almost done - how about you? I was able to get a head start online which is so great as many stores have great deals on shipping. My husband's family is mostly out of town and so shipping can be pricey.

I've really tried to stay out of the malls (sometimes it's unavoidable) but I spent a lot of time actually thinking about what I wanted to get my friends and family this Christmas to help me get a head start. I knew I would have limited time if I was out with the kids, so a list really helped!

Some of my family members and friends have moved so I wanted to get them items to make their new home feel cozy and inviting. So I have looked at some luxurious blankets and pillows and some beautiful coffee table books.

Books are something I love to give! Whether it's adults, teens or children. Books are fun, interesting and beautiful.

For kids - try giving them an activity instead of a movie or video game. I gave my niece and nephew some great science and art projects. They are fun! They keep them busy! and, I was surprised how much you can get for so little!

But for others - I really thought about them; what they like, what they need and what they would really enjoy. Or maybe treat them to something special - like a massage or a fabulous dinner.

When my sister and brother-in-law lived here, we didn't do a gift exchange, we went out for a amazing dinner and of course, wine and had an incredible night out. That was one of my favourite gifts to give!

Or, try getting a head start! This summer, during our holiday visiting my sister-in-law and her kids I contacted a local photographer to take some family photos. I framed the photos and sent them out to the grandparents. I know they will love them! And, I was able to buy them in August!

Think about creating a basket with items that the recipient will love - snacks, drinks, ornaments etc....go with a theme and get fun!

Or give a friend or family member a break and get them a cleaning service for the day. Perfect for new moms too!

Or get a great basket for the whole family - a basket with board games and snacks - a tone of fun for everyone!!

whatever you do for the holidays remember it's not about the money it really is the thought!

Changing with the Season

"I fell for this year's trends of paint and furniture - filling my home with sleek furniture and painting my whole home in cool white and grey tones - it's very chic but a bit sparse and gallery-like. Now that the cold weather is on it's way and the snow is starting to fall, I'm concerned that my home will feel chilly and uninviting in the cold and dark winter months. I don't want to repaint and redecorate but I'm worried I may have to....what can I do to warm up the look (and feel) of my home?"

There are lots of options for you. Sometimes when we follow trends they may take us in a direction and leave us feeling a bit uncomfortable. But relax, there are some very simple solutions for your dilemma and your space will feel so comfortable and warm for both you and your guests.

Follow these three elements.

Nature

Any and all natural elements add instant warmth to any space. So try integrating a few organic elements to your space. Try adding greenery - anytime you add plants or flowers, it adds life to your space. Try something easy to take care of (especially if you are not a gardener at heart). Natural grasses, ferns, peace lilies are all great options. Look for something full and lush not spiky and sparse. for special occasions, opt for fresh cut flowers. Other ways to add natural elements? Woven place mats, rattan baskets to hold extra blankets, a wood coffee table or end tables, a stump side table. Look for bowls or trays made of natural wood, or even just some sculptural wood pieces to display on your coffee table, console table or bookcase. The options are endless.

Props

Add some softness. Adding soft texture to any space equal warmth (the colour isn't even a factor). Look for chunky woven pillows, a cashmere blanket, or a sheepskin throw or area rug. Deep colours (like eggplant purple, chocolate brown and brunt deep red) work will all neutrals and add richness and sophistication to any room. An area rug can add colour, pattern and texture but something neutral is best. Accessories like books, can add personality to the space.

Lighting

mixing up your lighting can really create ambiance in any room. Invest in dimmer switches - in the evening 100 watt bulbs can be awfully harsh. Add floor and table lamps, candles, pot lights - the idea is to layer your lighting so that you can achieve any look you desire at any point in the day.

Making a room feel warm does not mean we need to work within a certain colour palette, it is creating the sensation of warmth and comfort. By following the three above mentioned elements you can add warmth to any room in your home regardless of the colour on the walls.

Christmas in a condo - some chic but unexpected decor ideas for the holidays

One of the best parts of the holiday season is the decor - it's fun and festive but does it have to be so tradition or so childlike? NO!! Living in a smaller space can also be a challenge for decorating and celebrating during the holidays

Here are some fun, festive and fabulous decor ideas (and party ideas) to ring in the holidays with some urban and contemporary flair!

- Fill large glass vases, bowls and other chic containers with glass ball ornaments in various shapes and sizes but in a coordinating colour concept (of your choice and the options are endless these days). Display these bowls and vases throughout your space. This adds some colour, texture and bling to your home!

- Want to keep it contemporary and chic? Work in holiday decor with your existing colour theme. If your home is very grey add some accents of silver reindeer, if your space is cream or cream add some white snowflakes. To keep it chic - don't clutter, keep it clean and streamlined, by using the existing colour palette the look is festive without being obvious.

- Hosting a Christmas lunch or cocktail? Be different. Stand out from the crowd. Serve the unexpected - like sushi. It's colourful, bit size and easy to order in! You can display these delicious bites throughout the space on crisp, clean white dishes. Who says we have to serve turkey or ham? In Italy, it's tradition to serve fish (7 kinds to be exact) on Christmas eve. A lighter meal would be appreciated by most (a healthy one too). The other great thing about serving sushi is that you can eat i standing up, so you don't have to have a formal sit down dinner party. If you want to keep the party even easier, your guests could trying making and rolling there own sushi.

- Where to hang the stocking? Maybe you don't have a fireplace mantel, there are many places to hang the stocking. Why not on the backs of chairs or stools? If you want to keep the chic, stylish looks of your condo don't buy the stockings covered in snowmen and Santa's, look for simple and less bright - there are so many options for stockings these days. Ladies - they even have stiletto stockings!

- For a centrepiece, pointsettas are traditional so why not opt for simple white or green arrangements? Looking for a brighter colour concept - whatever colour you choose find some floral arrangements that are simple and modern for your centrepiece. You could go very sleek with calla lilies or more voluminous with peonies or hydrangea. Simple and clean will give you that chic streamlined look. Add some shine with napkin rings and some texture with your table runner, table cloth or napkins. Some clean (fragrance free) candles also add some lovely ambiance.

- Waste not, want not. Instead of wrapping gifts in wrapping paper that just goes to waste, look for beautiful boxes that can be re-used by your friends and loved ones. A bit more expensive, yes but maybe not if they use the boxes over and over again.

- Christmas in a condo? Fitting a spruce or pine tree in your space can be very tricky and some condo boards even have rules against this. Yes, you could opt for a fake tree but storing it year after year could be an issue. Why not opt for some fauxwhite branches (available at craft stores and home decor stores), place the branches in a glass vase and hang some festive ornaments from the branches. It's clean and chic. Or, purchase a fragrant rosemary tree for the condo - it looks like a mini Christmas tree and smell incredible plus you can use the fresh rosemary in your cooking.

Holiday outdoor planters

The holidays are here! And the stores are full of Christmas cheer!

Have you seen all of those stunning natural outdoor planters and wreaths this season? They really add life to any front or side door entry. The fresh green foliage of pine and cedar along with accents of holly and cranberries are just gorgeous but how can you keep those beautiful planters looking fresh all season long?

It's so easy. Regular spritzing of room temperature water to the entire planter or wreath will keep the natural holiday decor looking it's best! At the bare, bare minimum spritz once a week but aim for every other day. Even though these are branches from evergreens they can yellow over time if they are not splashed with water. The branches can wilt and look very sad if not cared for.

Keep your natural wreaths and planters ever green all season long with some spritzing of room temperature water. Plus after the holiday season these planters still look great as they add some life and colour to a gloomy and dreary winter season - so keep them alive!

Welcome home for the Holidays!

The holidays are a time to welcome friends, family and neighbours to celebrate. So if you are hosting any holidays events this season you'll want to greet your guests with a warm welcome. So pretty up your porch this holidays season with ideas from this list.

1-- Start with a good clean. Shovel the snow or sweep away the leaves. Clean the glass. Wipe away the cob webs. Brush off the railings.

2 -- Keep your outdoor decor in it's own box and label it so it makes this job easy year after year. Also include supplies you might need like florist wire, scissors, snipers etc...

3 -- Pick a theme. The outdoor theme should be consistent with your indoor theme. So if you are using a sophisticated metallic theme the inside should be similar. If you are decorating for the child within, that's fine too just keep it consistent (that also means it won't look cluttered either)

4 -- A wreath. This is a basic that dresses up any door. You can go truly natural with fresh cedar, pine and cranberries but you can also find ones with bells and bling. Remember, a wreath hanger is a really inexpensive way to keep your door in perfect shape. The wreath should hang at about eye level, after all you want your guests to notice your fabulous decor!

5 -- Winter planters. Urns are another great way to add visual interest to your front entrance. Add cedar, pine, boxwood, holly, dogwood and cranberries for a truly natural look, you can add some shine with metallic ornaments too. The arrangement should be about the same height as the urn itself, in order to stay balanced.

6 -- Keep it green. Keep your natural planters, wreaths and anything else green all winter by spritzing it with room temperature water regularly (at least once a week but more often the better)

7 -- Add light. Remember the days are short during the winter so add some simple outdoor lights for effect. You can't go wrong with white lights but if you are committed to a colour theme pick a colour that works with your theme.

8 -- Don't forget the railings. Add a garland to the railing. You can wrap it around the railing or hand it in a bowed look. You can adds bows, lights or berries for some colour too.

9 -- Don't get too crazy! The most effective look regardless of your theme is keeping it simple.

10 -- Get everyone involved. Make it a family tradition and get the whole family involved in the planning and the set up. Many hands makes for light work ;)

How to avoid a cookie cutter room

All to often when you move into a place or you want to re-decorate a room, we take the easy route by heading to a great furniture store and buying what we see and copy the showroom floor. If you want a truly personalized space you really need to be selective of the various items you put in your room - what do I mean ?

There are tons of great finds out there. At furniture shops, specialty stores, antique shops, vintage stores, craft fairs etc...you just need to take the time to look. You want to look for quality, of course but you also want to look for a common thread. A unique and stylish space will include texture, shine, pattern and colour but it can also include a mix of styles. Mixing different styles or time periods does not necessarily mean you will have an eclectic room but you will have a room of designer quality.

For example, if you found a fantastic art deco desk in black and you found some end tables that look kind of country it could work if there is a common thread - such as colour, if the end tables had a black detail the items now have a common thread. The other trick is not to place them right beside each other in the room (psst...that way no one will notices the differences between the pieces that way). The other trick is to find a desk chair that's sleek or kind of funky.

Personal style is all about you. What you love, what you like and bringing it all together. You will always find a spot for something you absolutely love! Personal style also reflects your personality - are you fun and splashy? are you calm and serene? It does take time to build a room that reflects your personal style but it's worth it because you will be thrilled with the end results and you will feel so comfortable. Yes, just picking up a showroom display and bringing it home is easy but in the end your home will feel like a waiting room and less like the room you want.Spend the time - it's worth it!

Holiday style swap

The holidays are a fun and wonderful time of the year! It is so great to get together with friends and family but it can be expensive...but it doesn't have to be.

why not try some of these fun ways to save over the holidays and still have a fun and fabulous holiday

- try a cookie exchange. it's easier and most cost effective to bake multiples of one cookie plus it's a great way to try some new baking goodies. but choose your cookie exchange members carefully, reliable friends are best!

- if you know someone maybe even a family member who does not decorate the house anymore (maybe they travel or don't host anymore) ask if you can buy or have their old decor items

- get the kids involved in homemade decorations. popcorn strings, hand painted wood or over baked dough ornaments, paper chains etc...it's fun to do too!

- make wrapping paper and cards too

- share the duties: if you are great at wrapping and a friend is fabulous at decorating why not exchange duties? you'll both end up with fantastic results and less frustration too

- do a gift exchange (a great idea for the gown-ups) we don't really need anything and it helps every one's bank accounts

- what to do with all of your leftovers after those big holiday meals? do a left over party on the 26 th. my family started doing this a number of years ago and it's fun and so easy plus no more leftovers filling up the fridge. invite anyone you want - family, friends, neighbours and they are to bring their leftovers. have a table with all of the food for everyone to pick at, let the kids play, watch movies whatever and just have a relaxing day!

It's doesn't matter how you and your loved ones celebrate - the number of gifts, what you eat and how to decorate what matters is who you are with and the fun you have together!

Yes, that's right, Christmas is right around the corner!

I love this time of year - the sights, the smells and the overall feelings of happiness and joy.

There are so many ways to celebrate and decorate.

It doesn't have to be expensive either.

- Try making homemade decorations and it's fun for the whole family too!

- Picking a colour theme can keep you on track and focused

- Add to your decor collection each year, instead of totally splurging, building your collection is fun and can demonstrate the changes in your life as time goes by

- Be sure to pack your holiday decor items properly, that way they will last from season to season

- Decorate with edible items such as fruit and nuts, that way they serve two purpose and don't go to waste

- A great way to add to your collection every year is to shop for the decorative items after the holidays, sure you will have to wait the whole year to use them but think of the savings

- Looking for unique pieces? Try going to local craft fairs and shows for handcrafted and special pieces.

- Not sure what to get a friend or neighbour? A decor piece celebrating the holidays is never a bad idea. It has meaning and it is something they can use every year and think of you!

Don't get stressed! Keep the holidays fun and enjoyable. This time of year is truly for celebration!

Warehouse lofts in Ottawa

We have all seen these artsy inspired NYC lofts in the movies and television but where can we find one? Well, this style of housing is mostly popular in areas where they had a lot of warehouses which are no longer used for that purpose anymore and they have since been re-purposed into residences.

In Ottawa, we do not have a lot of that 'look' but that is about to change. If you haven't already seen (or heard) there is a great new development in Ottawa called ' Distillery Warehouse Lofts'. The features are amazing: wide plank hardwood, quartz counter tops, chic Euro inspired kitchens, stainless steel accents and brick walls. The colour packages are incredible too! OK, so it has been months since I have written but that's only because I have been so incredibly busy!!

Well, the house sold is just under 2 months of being on the market. The overall experience was positive but you really do start to see how many unprofessional 'professionals' are out there in the real estate world and how they can affect you. We had some agents bring clients through our home who clearly did not understand the differences and expectations between a new home and a home built in 1959! We had a few agents who did not even both to read the basic info on our home such as "3 bedroom with a in-ground pool" which is totally basic and when the agents brought their clients through they were out raged that the listing did not include this info - we had to point out that YES it did you just failed to read the listing info. I really felt bad for the clients as their agents were wasting their precious time on listings that did not meet their needs. It really goes to show that NOT all agents are created equal and you really need to find one that is really working for you!!

But that being said we did find someone who fell in love with our home after one showing! We had an offer the next day and the process was smooth from there. We worked out a closing date and a price that we were all happy with.

Our move into our new home was also smooth, we were really well prepared and packed our belongings carefully and with great detail. We also used a fantastic moving company that I use regularly for staging moves as well www.firstratemovers.com We had a few small bumps in the road when our contractor failed to have to house totally ready for us by the time we moved in. There wasn't a lot to be done but he somehow managed to drop the ball and still have work to do but we managed. The house was a bit chaotic in the beginning but luckily my mother-in-law had the kids for a few days so that we could concentrate on setting up. We took care of the kitchen and the kids' bedrooms - when they came home they were so happy to see their rooms and us, of course!

Now that we have moved in, (mostly) unpacked and have finished the updates, we are really loving the new house, the neighbourhood and the change of pace. It's truly amazing just how new surroundings can really change your outlook, energy levels and lifestyle.

With this incredible sunny summer weather it is hard to even think about the fall but the runways are displaying some incredible inspiration for our home decor.

On the runways we are seeing a lot of sophisticated colour palettes - olives, navy, burgundy, camels tones, deep browns and greys. We are also seeing luxurious fabrics like leather, wool, fur and tweed. We are also seeing some real influences from the 1970's - so what does this mean for your home? Consider adding some of these rich colours to your current palette to add depth and sophistication. Think about layering different fabrics on your bed and your sofa with throw pillows and blankets to create visual interest and a warm and cozy feel to the entire space. As for the 70's influence, take inspiration for the scale and shape of the furniture pieces from that decade. Sofas are fuller and less streamlined, wood stains are mid tone and curved. By adding some 'current' items you will make the whole room feel updated plus it reflects personal style when you can embrace trends that you like and that work for your lifestyle. But be sure to just add SOME influences, when we jump right into a trend and completely immerse ourselves in it, it is total overload plus it gets expensive when you constantly change with every trend. Just go with some of the items and influences that you like and everything else will fall into place. there is always room for the things that we love...

Fashion definitely influence home decor so take some ideas from your extra thick fall fashion magazines and bring those principles to life in your very own home. I know I will ;)

Well it has been about 5 weeks - lots of showing but no bites...yet!

It's funny we decided to stop with open houses, although we had a lot of traffic it was distruptive for our little ones and it brought in a lot of neighbours looking for reno and decor ideas. But a few blocks away there is another home for sale and their open houses has already driven a few people knocking on our door for a tour!

We have decided to drop the asking price hoping for a quick sale before we head out on holidays so we have one less thing to worry about.

Keeping the house clean and presentable has been a bit challenging at times but over all no too bad. We have kept things organized and we haven't had much in the way of last second showings so we have time to tidy up.

We know it will happen, we haven't hit the average days on market yet, so no stress....

Well, the house has been on the market for roughly two weeks - we have had a lot of showings and two open houses which have been busy.

For the most part the feedback is positive but it is funny to hear comments from some people that pertain to the age of the home. I think a lot of people fail to understand what a home built in 1959 looks like - they don't have walk-in closets and en suites etc...I am not sure if there is a lack of understanding from the buyer or the agent. It's a great house, in a great area, on a great street, with many updates but it still has many of the features of a home from it's original time period.

Some tricky parts about selling with two young children is the two young children! Getting out of the house and have it looking perfect for showings is a challenge but it can be done with planning and lots of planning. Luckily we have restricted showings, which means they can occur at the times that we outline and if someone wants a viewing outside of the designated time - we get to approve that. So we have a schedule that works for us. I also really downsized the amount of kids toys in the house and packed them away and you know what? They don't even notice. The toys that are hanging around the main living area are easily tucked away in a basket in the corner of the room, so the house is neat and tidy. I also find picking up regularly really helps keep clutter to a minimum.

I won't say that selling your own home isn't stressful but i think the stress can be kept to a minimum with lots of planning.

We are still on the market but I don't think it will be much longer. It is a great house that we fell in love with so why wouldn't someone else?

Well, things are moving along smoothly not too many bumps which is great!

Our small renos are moving right along...I think what really saved us time on the renos was the fact that we ordered all of the materials with our contractor's advice (and measurements) we also ordered items that were in stock and before the renos began. While everything was being processed our contractor, Danny started on the small stuff that didn't require the new materials. That saved us a lot of time and energy...

the house hasn't been too much of a mess, our crew worked from one area and once they finished they moved into the next area which has been great considering we have too little ones and we needed to keep every thing and every one safe and secure. Plus you don't feel like you are living in a disaster zone if the work is confimed to an area.

Next up, we are getting the basement and living room carpets cleaned (post reno work). I know the new owners may even ditch these carpets but I think if they look and feel good, it will be appreciated in viewings plus you should never assume anyone is going to do anything with your home...they may not want to for a variety of reasons.

Our new sod is looking great and super lush and green but will really need a trim and soon....hopefully mother nature will agree and lay off the rain for a few days...

My goal is to start staging by the end of next week, after a good post-reno clean up! The kids rooms are done but I need to get all of the toys out of the living room area, tidy up our bedroom (although it has already been depersonalized), declutter the kitchen counter tops, and really prepare the basement laundry/rec room space and the main floor family room. Oh and get some flower pots outside...some people might think it is overkill but I think (my husband agrees too) that it is super important to present our home in it's best light!

...and then photo shoot time! What so many sellers don't realize is that timing is everything with renos but also with getting your home on the market. Your photos and listing should be up early in the week (if you are planning an open house) so that buyers can view it online and then make plans for a showing or open house. We are aiming for photos next weekend and getting it live online on the Monday.

The pool openers are coming next weekend and we should be ready for an open house in two weeks time.

I am feeling really good about this house and I know we have taken very good care of it for the future owner and that shows!

Prepping my own home for sale...

So you probably think that it is easy for a home stager to prep her own house for sale.

In some ways it is - I know the importance, I know what has to happen to make the most money from my home sale, I do this everyday BUT it is still a lot of work! Especially with two little ones running around...

We have started...the big decluttering happened roughly a week agao and WOW, it is amazing how much junk and clutter are collected after only 4 years of living here! I still have two more closets to tackle - that is on my to-do list fo this week. I am no means an organizational freak but I know it is important for the closets to look neat and tidy so I have been decluttering and organizing too.

Since we had some renos and painting to do, we decided to minimize the chaos and put our dogs in the kennel.

The touch painting is done! Not a huge job but a bit of a pain. But it really makes the rooms look clean and fresh.

This past weekend, like many of you, we did a lot of spring clean up in our backyard and that has made a huge difference. My husband cleaned out the gutters - what a mess! I will start the planting next weekend.

There is a lot on our to-do list but we know it is all worth it! We have a few small renos that are in the works now and are progressing smoothly (with the execption of a neighbourhood power outage) we are moving forward!

Staging your home is much more that just putting some throw pillows on a sofa and some touch up paint. It is having your home turn key ready for the new owners. Yes, staging your home and prepping it to sell for the most money possible is a lot of work but it will be worth it for us (the sellers) and for the buyers.

Next...we have to finish the renos, clean the carpets (professionally), some planting and the final step - staging!

Making cents of your decor budget

OK, so it is time to move in and you desperately need new furniture well, make that new everything! Where do you start? Where do you spend? This tried and true equation nets you a well-appointed living room on any budget.

25% of your budget should go towards your new sofa (if in a small home or condo a sofa sleeper is a great idea). Stick neutral in the colour scheme that way it will stand the test of time in terms of style. If this seems steep think of it this way - the sofa is the main component of the room and will be used everyday single day. It is worth it!

20% on occasional chairs. They do not have to match the sofa but they should coordinate. Think about using these pieces to add some texture (like leather) or pattern (pinstripe and herringbone are classics). Seating will be most important in the living room and therefore will eat the bulk of your budget.

15% on an area rug (assuming the flooring is tile or hardwood). Think of adding some colour or texture with this element too.

15% on window treatments. Unless your living room winow leaves you feeling really exposed you can probably get away with some simple pannels.

8% on lighting. Floor lamps, table lamps, you may want to include an overhead fixture and perhaps candles. All of these lighting elements help create mood and ambiance.

7% on tables. Coffee table and side tables. If you are still low on seating look at some ottomans that can offer both seating, storage and surface for display etc...there are many options at many stores in a variety of price points.

4% on decor pillows. Look around at home decor stores. By mixing pattern, colour and texture your overall look with elevate. Pattern, Colour, Texture and Shine add visual interest to any and every room. Get creative!

3% on decor accessories. Take a look at garage sales, clearance rack at decor stores and get creative with your own things. Just placing something unexpected in a living room can be very artful!

3% on paint. Ask your painter (if you can afford one) if he/she can buy the paint - they will know the amount, type and usually where they get discounts. Or ask your home improvement person how to get the right amount and what finish to get. I met a wonderful family today in Westboro and they have decided to put their family home up for sale. Although a tough decision for them as this home is full of memories - they feel it is time to move on! Moving can be a hard decision to make and you will know when it is the right time.

We are in the thick of the busy spring selling season - so why is your home still on the market? Enhancing your curb appeal might be just what you need to sell your home quickly and for the most money! 1 -- Keep it clean! was the front, side ans back of the house. the new owners will be looking at all sides of the home. rent or borrow a pressure washer - they do such an incredible job on just about everything.

We spend the majority of our days and even lives working! Many of us work desk jobs everyday and that can really be repetitive and some days boring. But there are ways to liven up your at work workspace and make it more appealing to be at your desk everyday.

a -- add some colour! it brightens up the workspace and stimulates the senses. think pen/pencil holders, sticky notes, file folders, accordion files etc... in bright and bold colours.

b -- get cozy! replace that old, lumpy 'work' sweater you throw on when the AC is cranked up with a smooth, stylish and still cozy pashmina in a colour that looks great on you. you can even throw it over the back of your desk chair to add some texture and colour too!

c -- let there be life! a beautiful potted plant can add some freshness to the space but think about your desk position and the type of plant - does it need sun, shade etc...you may even want to think about basil or mint for some refreshing scent too!

d -- bright idea! replace the 'office' looking desk lamp with something more homey and stylish, you workspace will feel more inviting for you and any clients.

e -- eat right! keep some healthy snacks in the office desk - popcorn, dried fruit, are great options for when the urge hits - they keep you satisfied and there won't be a sugar crash.

Adding some personality

We've just moved into a brand new house. Our bathroom has been nicely finished with white Shaker-style cabinets, limestone floors and mosaic tile in the bathtub-shower area, but it still looks very plain. What can we do to add interest and colour?

What a perfect blank canvas to work with, all it needs is some personality! For instant (and inexpensive) graphic punch and colour, add a great shower curtain. Stripes are really fresh and fun but there are some great patterns in scroll motifs too which would add some more sophistication and glam to the space. Adding colour with towels is another super easy fix. Work off of the shower curtain to keep a flow and theme in the room. Towels also add some great texture and soften the room (a lot of hard surfaces such as tile can make a room feel cold). You could even go with a solid shower curtain and a patterned towel combo - the possibilities are endless! Some pretty paper wrapped soaps or soap bottles can up the 'look' of the room too. A small detail but details to make a difference! Think flooring, a simple bathroom mat is OK but what not really make a splash with a really textured and fluffy area rug. Adding some natural element to the space will also add some warmth, try wood framed mirror. I love to add interesting art pieces in a bathroom, again it adds sophistication to the room. It can be any style of art - watercolour, photography etc...Think about organization too. a basket or tray on the counter top to keep personal items makes the space feel clean and tidy. A bathroom can easily be transformed with some splashes of colour and accessories, an easy and affordable makeover!

Children grow and change right before your eyes. One minute they fit into their favourite t-shirt and overalls and the next day they can't even squeeze into those same piece of clothing. Their tastes and interests are no exception! So if you have children or are expecting her are some great ideas to create a children's bedroom that can actually grow with them and their ever changing lives.

- stay away from an entire room of child sized furniture. Items such as dressers and bookcases will be able to store their items beyond the toddler years. Children's furniture also tends to be more expensive and with a lower quality construction and finishing. Invest in 'adult' size pieces that can be used in the future. If you want these items of furniture to grow with your child stick with neutrals that will be classic and can also be used with either gender. As this child may not be your only one...plan ahead

- Check out open-air photo albums, basically a cork board that has been covered in fabric with ribbons attached in a diamond patter. This is the perfect display area for your child to reflect their tastes and things that mean the most to them - letters, cards, photographs and posters of their favourite (at the moment) celebrity. Justin Beibermaybe your daughter's crush right now but that could change very quickly, instead of damaging your walls with push pins and tape from all of the 'Beiber' fever posters all over the wall use the open air photo album as an alternative. They can be made at home or purchased from more home decor stores. I have one in my daughter's room, I have put up her ultrasound photo, her baby cards etc...she is turning one in June and I know as she grows she will be able to use this board as a display area to reflect and express her personal style.

- paint! Keep the paint colour on the walls neutral. Your child's favourite colour will constantly change, so keep neutral and add colour splashes in the artwork, pillows, bedding etc...plus toddler toys are often very colourful themselves. Too much colour in a room can be over stimulating and changing the paint colour with every phase can be expensive and disruptive.

- artwork. Use frames! Frame your child's artwork it will add some fun and whimsy to their room and will make them feel proud. Frames are inexpensive and reusable, so their art gallery can grow with them. Framing their art also creates a special gallery for you too, this demonstrates their growing skills and abilities. Try framing some fun and punchy fabric this adds interest and energy to the space (or a feeling of calm depending on the fabric choice). Or try using images from a calendar (for example Winnie the Pooh) of your child's current interest and framing it as art - very easy, inexpensive and interchangeable.

- The floor. Kids spend a lot of time on the floor - falling, playing, reading, doing homework or just hanging out with friends. Whether you have wall to wall carpet or hardwood flooring, try adding a textured (like a big fluffy shag) or bold bright patterned area rug to create a more sophisticated look but also a practical one too. In my son's room I added a neutral toned shag rug and he just loves to read, play and roll around on his bedroom floor plus it looks great too!

- Storage, storage, and more storage. as your child grows so will their belongings, interests and activities. Easy fixes like bookcases, desks, dressers, ottomans, hooks, benches anything that can be used to tuck away or hang up their items is a good tool. Try and keep those floors and surfaces clutter free. This teaches your child even at a young age to be organized.

- pillows. Pillows are great to add colour but also seating in a child's room. They can b on the bed but also on the floor. does your child's room have a cute corner or nook? That's another great spot for a pile of pillows. Add some different textures, colours and patterns - this adds visual interest, fun and function to the room. It's a bit more 'grown up' than giant teddy bears all over the room. Look at bold and graphic prints - a child's room doesn't have to be plastered with bunnies, bears and trains.

- light. A bold chandelier is a perfect for a little princess room but adds glam to a teen space. Many home improvement stores have some great chandeliers too.

Your child's interests will be age appropriate so it is OK to have a basic space that can grow with your child. Constantly reinventing the room gets expensive and disruptive. By keeping it classic you are keeping budget friendly and as your child grows and he/she will bring in their style which will really make them feel proud. Have an everlasting room....

Don't sweat the small stuff - organize it!! Try these creative fixes using basic but brilliant household staples to cure your clutter and keep your life in working order!

One tool but four useful ways to use it!

The utensil holder

It holds your utensils but try this : using it to hold your various teas just like the pretty tea packets we see in shops and restaurants; try using it to organize and keep all of your hair tools in one spot, rollers, combs and irons can all be organized in one spot; and how about a new home for your costume jewelry? earrings can even be poked through mesh holders so they can hang on.

The spice rack

Of course, an easy and practical way to keep your spices at your finger tips but what about using it as : a desk caddy - keep the push pins, rubber bands, labels etc...in small containers of the spice rack this creates a simpler and happier workspace; another great use is in the garage or workshop, this is a great way to sort and organize your nuts, screws, bolts and other small pieces; and how about a perfect craft organizer for beads, bobble and other rainy day craft materials.

The hanging basket

Perfect in the kitchen for fruit but it works wonders in a chaotic closet to keep belts, scarves and clutches off of the floor. Moroccan influence is everywhere! Fashion magazines, Travel blogs, Cooking shows, even America's Next Top Model has shot there and now Morocco is coming into your home! Check out any home decor magazine or store and you'll see the Moroccan influence.

So what are we seeing?

- gorgeous colours in vibrant and rich tones

- hand crafted bowls, sculptures, dishes and more

- stunning and detailed textiles

- embroidered pillows

- ornate rugs and carpets

- Sultan style light fixtures

Now how can you have some Moroccan inspiration without over doing it and looking like a Moroccan eatery? Just pick and choose your favourite pieces, don't use them all! But - you need to have a few elements so that you have a common thread and your space does not look like a collection of random looks. A few pillows pairs with a sultan light fixture or an ornate rug with some hand crafted pieces.

When working with a theme be sure to have balance. Start with a blank or neutral slate such as cream walls and furniture and some darker pieces like a dark espresso stained dining set and coffee table and then implement the Moroccan influences. Spring is here! The grass is starting to turn green, the snow is gone, the sun is out and some flowers are beginning to bloom but spring also brings...Spring Cleaning! Things are really starting to pile up and get out of control! I dream of having organized closets, as I think many moms do. To find exactly what we are looking for with ease and grace ... ahhh, dare to dream!

Getting things under control and organized is a process and with growing families your amount of 'stuff' just grows with it! But it feels so great to tackle the clutter and keep it away. But how? Get smart with your storage and spend time sorting it.

Starting with a good purge is a great first step. Sort through the linen closet, the garage, the kids dressers, your closet (eek) and other storage areas. I am in this stage right now and I cannot believe these things that are still kicking around in plain sight. You will be so surprised at what you have held onto and for how long. If you haven't used it, worn it or even thought of it in 6 months to a year - retire it! There are so many different ways to 'get rid of junk'. Donate it, sell it, toss it, re-purpose it. Be realistic - if you wouldn't want it (due to it's condition i.e stains, tears, broken etc...) will anyone else want it? Once we unload the 'access baggage' we feel lighter in many ways. Clutter adds to stress, so by eliminating (or reducing) the clutter we are managing our stress too.

Now that you have purged, you likely still have a lot of things. So now what? They all need a place. This is where creative storage solutions come in. Unless you leave in a palatial home you likely need to have multi purpose pieces so look for furniture pieces that offer double duty.

Try these ideas:

- Baskets, baskets, baskets - with a lid or without, when things such as toys, books and magazine have a 'place' the space just feels neater. I have a great waterproof basket in my bathroom for my children's' bath toys. They love to get their toys out for bath time and then put them away too.

- Metro Shelving - this heavy duty chrome wire shelving is great in garages, laundry rooms, pantries and workshops. It has an industrial look but it is easy to clean and very sturdy.

- Bulletin Boards - best hung behind doors or in an area where they are not attracting too much attention. This is a perfect set up for kids' schedules, notes, permission forms, bills and other reminders. Think about all of the papers that get stuffed and ignored in a 'junk' drawer. By pinning them up in view, you'll be likely to purge the bulletin board once tasks are completed because the papers are in your sight line.

- Hooks and Pegs - these are great and often very inexpensive, they come in a variety of finishes from wood to metal. These work well in mud rooms, kids play areas, kids' room and bathrooms. When they are being used for children be sure to install them at a height that is functional for them, other wise the kids won't use them. These are ideal for hanging coats, backpacks, towels, dog leashes and more. A great idea for the mudroom is to pair up the hooks with a storage bench.

- Storage bench - piano benches work well too. these are great because they can store mitts, hats, gloves etc... they can also be used for seating. I have a few leather storage benches at home and we store our extra for parties in there - place mats, napkins, table cloths etc...items we don't use everyday plus the benches come out and act as additional seating - double duty!!

- Paint cans - new ones are best or use large,empty juice cans with the tops removed. These are perfect for storing kids stuff in an arts and crafts cupboard. The are great for paint brushes, crayons, rulers, beads, shells etc...You can label them and get the kids to decorate them too!

- Old trunks - check out vintage and antique shops for these but I have seen newer versions in home decor stores. They are great for storing extra linens and pillows. They look great too. In a guest room, keep one in the corner or at the foot of the bed, let guests know that they can help them selves to additional blankets, towels and pillows (some guests will be too shy to ask).

- Large fabric or plastic boxes - these are great 'hiding spots' for items such as laundry detergent, dog food, etc...things we use everyday but don't necessarily like to look at.

Now off I go to tackle some more rooms in need of organizing....

I do believe in love at first sight and I believe it can happen more than once in a lifetime. I have experienced love at first sight when I met (my now) husband and when I saw both of my children for this very first time, I have also seen it in real estate. The moment you see your first home for the very first time it is just perfect....well it should be.

When it comes to selling your home you always make sure that the interior is pristine. Every detail is just right and the home looks just beautiful but wait...what about your exterior? Yes, curb appeal, it matters, and in a big way. Over 80 percent of buyers will view your home on the Internet first and then decide where to book viewings so be sure to spend as much time prepping the outside as you do on the inside. Since buyers make up their mind about a home within the first 30 seconds, you don't have any time to waste.

The season you are selling your home can be a factor( selling season can be any season of the year) but there are many ways to make certain that the exterior of your home is picture perfect. Think of the many guidelines that you followed to ensure your interior is beautiful, they apply to the exterior too.

De-clutter: get rid of the garbage cans, the strollers, the sporting equipment, kids toys etc...from the front lawn and porch area

Clean: sweep, mow, rake, shovel depending on what the exterior elements call for but be sure to clean and clear the entry way to your home. And in the winter months, be sure to sand or salt the walk way (safety first plus, you don't want buyers to remember falling on the icy path leading to your home).

Details: pay attention to the small things. Is the front door paint faded or chipping? Do the stairs or walls or windows need a good power washing? Is your exterior light working? Is your doorbell working? Do your shrubs need a trimming? Are your flower pots looking alive and well? Paying attention to those details sends a positive message to buyers and gets them excited to see the inside of your home.

Decor: add some colour and life to the exterior with a decorative wreath, add some colourful outdoor pillows to your bench or chair, add some plants and/or flowers to exterior pots. This can be done in the cooler fall and winter months too.

First impressions are lasting impressions. Showcase your home and you will bring in the best buyers with the best offers, all of the hard work is worth it. Go ahead, be the envy of the neighbourhood....

April 22nd is right around the corner, for those of you that don't know April 22nd is also Earth Day. Going 'green' is not just a trend but a way of living and protecting the planet for future generations. When it comes to green living there are so many options for reduce, reuse and recycle and your home projects are no exception. Take a look at some of these ideas and consider them when it comes to your next home improvement project.

In the kitchen and laundry room:

- consider Energy star appliances. They use less energy and they will save you money!

In the bathroom and kitchen:

- consider locally made counter tops and cabinets

- consider cabinets made of recycled materials or sustainable materials

We are so used to living and being in our own space that we often overlook certain things. We don't see our collections as a big deal or our favourite (but ugly) chair as a problem, well same goes for the smells in our home! We are so used to the aroma that we don't notice it. But when it comes time to sell, we need to start noticing these things. When it comes to odour, every house comes with one, especially if you have children and/or pets.

Some of the best ways to eliminate these odours?

A professional carpet cleaning (whether it is wall-to-wall or area carpets) makes a huge difference not only does it make the space feel and smell fresh but it helps to keep your flooring in good condition. Harsh chemicals are not needed to improve the look, smell and feel of your carpets.

A good scrub down. Bathrooms and the kitchens are the hot spots for odours, so be sure to give these rooms a really good cleaning. Pay attention to your appliances too. Your fridge itself can develop an unpleasant odour. This should also include a good hose down of your garbage cans too.

So can aromatherapy help m sell my home? You bet!

Studies show that the first thing people notice when walking into a home is - the smell. Strong and unpleasant odour can really turn buyers off. A buyer's impression is made in the first 30 seconds - this 30 seconds is most critical! Staging sets the scene for a buyer to mentally move in and the scent can evoke emotion and truly appeal to the senses.

Using potpourri, essential oils, candles and other elements can help you sell your home. In a small space like a condo or a small home, be sure to stick with one perfume. In a larger home, you can use a few scents but I would recommend no more than three.

- lavender. has a very calming effect, this would be ideal in a master bedroom, an ensuite bath or even a nursery.

- balsam fir. smells like Christmas, perfect for the holiday season to help set the tone.

- jasmine. another perfect scent for the master suite, it has an exotic and romantic effect.

- peppermint. a clean, fresh and cool scent which would work beautifully in the summer months in the kitchen.

- apple and cinnamon. the smell of fresh baking appeals to all ages. during an open house you could bake a pie (homemade or store bought) . the scent is very welcoming and cozy, ideal for the kitchen on a fall or winter day.

When buying candles or oils, smell them before they are lit or assembled. The scent should be light, if it is too strong remember it will be even stronger once lit or assembled.

It's now April! The sun is out and the snow is just about gone but ugh....the gardens and lawns could really use some serious sprucing up!

Here are some great tips to go from winter drab to spring fab in your yard in just one weekend!

1 - Clean up. Rake the lawn and the flower beds to remove dead leaves and perennial over growth.

2 - Maintenance. Look into some turf products to repair the salt damage, Turf Revolution has a great salt prevention product. Also many flowering bushes benefit from some early spring pruning to help them really flourish in the summer months. Also cut back your ornamental grasses to about 2-3 inches above the ground level.

3 - Mulch. Is a great way to retain moisture and to keep weeds down where they belong plus it has a great rustic finish. Be sure to keep mulching your perennial beds for once they have broken ground.

4- Plan. Lay out your plants on the ground before digging so you can know how it will look and if you have enough plants. Figure out which plants will work best and where - shade plants and sun plants need a different placement in your garden. Also plant for the season, in the early spring the weather can still be harsh, so look to plant hardier flowers such as pansies, tulips and daffodils in the early part of the garden season.

5 - Big and lush. when it comes to planting your flower pots or boxes - fill them up! You want them to look lush and beautiful. Always start planting from the middle and work outwards.

Some gardening trends to look for:

Colour blocking - just like in fashion, we are seeing gardens in one or two main colours with a splash of a third.

Height. In your boxes or pots, add height with pussy willows or dogwood.

Colour trends. We are seeing a lot of black pots and yellows, purple and white are the hot colours for this gardening season.

Small gardens. Condos and apartments can get in on the fun of gardening. There are tons of new products on the market that are suited for the urban gardener.

Veggies! People are trending towards growing and cooking with their own veggies. You'll be surprised as to what you can successful grow in your own yard!

So dig in and bring on Spring!!

We have been so busy staging and decorating homes this past month that I have barely had anytime to sit! So here I sit for the first time in a while and of course, I am checking out homes on the market. What am I seeing? Well, I am seeing a lot of great inventory in a variety of neighbourhood throughout the city but another thing I have noticed is how disconnected many of the properties seem.

I know when you move into a home you are so excited to really make the space your own and put a personal style stamp in your new abode, however, when it comes time to sell be sure to review your home objectively (or call a stager). Looking at many of these homes (especially the single family homes) I am seeing one room to another room in a totally different style, colour concept and overall look. The listing photo galleries almost seem like a mosaic of totally different homes.

When it comes time to sell your home, be sure to have a common thread throughout the entire home - that could be colour or family of colours or a consist theme (such as French Provincial influence). When a virtual photo tour takes you through a home that offers many colours, themes and more it feels like a crazy roller coaster ride.

When your home consists of many different colours (especially bold and bright ones) and/or different themes these entire house feels choppy because every room has turned into a separate compartment. It also sends a confusing message to potential buyers, although the buyers are not buying your furniture and personal style they are trying to mentally move in and if they can't move past the crazy decor - they are not buying!

So when it comes time to prepare your home for sale, just KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid!

One colour of paint (or family of colours) throughout the entire house makes it feel fluid and larger. Make the transition of new colours in areas where it makes sense (such as entirely separate rooms like bathrooms and bedrooms or any room with a door). Minimize the themes and try to keep just one consistently through the house. Keep your place clean and clutter free!

The month of March has been an absolute whirlwind and now it's almost over! In like a lion and out like a lamb...they say! Speaking of animals, I have been fortunate enough to travel to both Montreal and Toronto this past week and have been checking out some design trends in these cities as well as my own, Ottawa, and I have seen so many 'animal inspired' elements in home decor. Lots and lots of animal prints in upholstery - pillows, area rugs and throw blankets. Leopard, snake skin, tiger and giraffe, oh my! What is great about animal print is that although bold it is classic and seems to never go out of style. It is a great colour palette to work off of and offers a great splash of visual interest. Don't think you can go that bold? Start small with a faux fur pillow in a bedroom or on an occasional chair. Integrate a few animal prints that are in a tone on tone colour wave to your living room space. Don't like earth tones? We are seeing animal prints is many different colour waves including turquoise and magenta!The boldness of the animal print pattern is so engaging and interesting. Other great ways to integrate nature into your home

- check out driftwood, it is organic and naturally sculptural

- add some bamboo to a bathroom, greenery makes any and every space feel alive

- check out bits and bobbles with natural inspiration on a coffee table or any showcase area, a small display of little birds, shells or starfish add serenity and simplicity to any space

- framed artwork with animals, birds and flowers can look very traditional but many stores have a more modern take on nature inspired art pieces.

- animal prints are not the only way to integrate animals and textiles into a space, many stores offer options with a softer approach with colours from nature like green, blue and yellow or look for floral and fauna prints.

Take a close look at the image above, they have embraced the elements of nature biut still have a contemporary style. The wallpaper has a leaf motif, the zebra print area rug is bold, the framed artwork is various shapes and sizes of leaves, a few collectibles of coral and shells are on display and of course, some greenery.

Clean your carpets, naturally...

Canada is such a wonderful place to live but the changing seasons can really take its toll on our surroundings. Your flooring sees some of the worst of it! Old meets New

This is an interesting time in home decor and design. It seems as though the times of buying all new furniture because you have moved into a larger or smaller home have gone by the wayside. People are way more aware of waste and are embracing the idea of recycling, reusing and re-purposing - and I love it! Not just from an environmental stand but from a design perspective. When people can be creative with their existing pieces whether it's refinishing instead of tossing them out, or using a piece in a different room than intended I think it really shows personal style and innovation. I have seen a lot of designers embracing this concept too which I personally feel is a part of their role - being creative! It's too easy to just wipe the slate clean and start from scratch and we can't do that in this economy. I know my clients are looking for great ideas to reuse their prized pieces and that's one of the many reasons why they hire me.

Usually model homes are a proponent of the concept of completely starting a new but there is a model condo suite at QWest in Westboro that is totally refreshing!! I love what the designers did (and no it is not my design). The crew from 2H Interiors mastered mixing old with new in this suite. They re-purposed some pieces and made them fresh but then added splashes of glam and modern. You will notice streamlined pieces mixed with more elegant and ornate items. An antique China cabinet in the office/den and a bedroom dresser as a hutch/storage piece in the living/dining space. I know this may sound very strange to some or perhaps many of you but I think it is genius and really reflects of where design is going due to the economic and environmental climate in 2011.

Old and New can work together to create a truly beautiful and unique space. I think it is not only important to express your personal flare but to be smart about it too. If there is nothing wrong with your pieces, do they need to be replaced? Make it work!

Celebrity at home - Ashley Tisdale

Ashley Tisdale is a lovely young starlet from the popular "High School Musical" series and now starring in "Hellcats" has something else to add to her list - a stunning home with a reflection of her unique personal style. The star's first home consists of Spanish architecture and beautiful lush gardens surrounding her turquoise pool. But this house is totally girl-friendly, even the furniture! Take a close look at her living room coffee table - it's a vintage Louis Vuitton travelling trunk with a custom glass table top. She surrounds herself with fresh flowers and soft and serene colour tones. Her custom made bed design is just fabulous for movie nights and lazy Sunday's as the flat screen TV pops up from the console at the foot of the bed! But the closet has to be one of the biggest and organized one has ever seen, it's every woman's dream especially for those who love to shop!

Her house really reflects her style with the uber feminine touches such as the soft colour palette and the luxurious fabric selection. But should she ever decide to move out, the basic bones of the home could work for anyone's personal style.

It's not about you!

I started staging and decorating model homes in 2003 and the one thing that I have always told my clients is 'it's not about you!' I know it sound a bit harsh and some might say rude but here is what I am saying - when it comes to presenting a home for sale, either a resale or a new home - it's about the buyer not the seller.

The home must appeal to the buyer.

I was recently asked to tour a model suite in the Westboro area. I was told that the developer and the marketing team hated it, they asked me for feedback. They wanted something that was "more this and less that". I went in alone, not wanting to be influenced by their thoughts. I loved it! The mix of colours, textures and finishes really stood out. The designers had selected some unique pieces that were memorable and special.

I also thought it was really smart how they mixed new contemporary pieces with some older items, which really reflects the downsizing demographic the builder/developer is catering too. I knew this model would show and photograph beautifully. I knew it would get the buyers' attention too! Although the model is not the personal style of both the developer and the marketer, they needed to understand that the model suite is there as a sales tool not a personal decorating project.

All too often I hear clients tell me that they didn't like how I positioned their furniture or the colours I selected to stage their home. "This is not how I would do it"-they say. Homeowners need to understand that when their house is up for sale it is no longer their home. Letting go is tough but important when selling your home, it's not about you anymore, it's about the new family or couple that will call this home theirs.

Keep your home healthy

It seems like everyone is sick these days. I know everyone in my house has the flu which is very unpleasant so let this be a reminder to keep your home healthy with regular check ups and some 'at-home' prevention too.

Clothes Dryer

- after every load of laundry, clean out the lint filter

- clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct too

Refrigerator

- clean the inside regularly using a scrub brush and some mild soap or baking soda

- don't try to repair a broken fridge if you do not know what you are doing, you could do way more harm than good!

Oven

- wipe excess crumbs from the interior and stove top as well

- wipe and scrub down the oven racks too

Microwave

- clean the inside walls

- clean the removable glass tray

Smoke Detector

- remember to have one on each floor

- vacuum the detectors

- replace the batteries each season

Computer, cellphone and other

- wipe down these surfaces (remote controls too) with disinfecting wipes especially during cold and flu season

A clean home is a healthy (and happy) home.

Treat your appliances with TLC and you will have a long, happy and healthy life together!

Paint colour trends for 2011

What will be "all the rage" for paint colours this coming year?

You will be seeing a lot of splash and fun 'pop' colours. Because paint is such an easy and inexpensive way to transform any room, in 2011 the colours will have more vibrancy and brilliance that ever before. If you aren't too adventurous, try these colours in room such as a powder room or laundry room. Neutrals are always in style too, in 2011 shades of grey and still gorgeous and so are the organic hues.

1 -- Lime Green. Looks great in a kid's room or playroom. Lots of energy and movement with this colour. Can work in a condo or a family home. Check out Sico in Pastis 6121-42

2 -- Smoke Grey. This is less pop and more posh. Looks great in a master bedroom or living room. Can be on the darker side so be sure to balance with lighter artwork and other furnishings. Take a closer look at Benjamin Moore in Smoke 2122-40

3 -- Fern Green. A more sophisticated cousin to the lime green. This colour is calming and soothing but does add some energy too. Works in a master suite or guest suite. Check out Beauti-Tone Paints in Fern SD019

It shows as a soft silver and if you are looking for a perfectly soft paint colour to show off your furniture and art this would work well in that space. 5-- Lemon Yellow. A big, bold but happy colour! Great for accents and stencils like in a children's room or even a workspace. Check out Sico in Slightly Sour 6097-42

6 -- Hot Pink. Definitely another bold choice but really works when paired with classic neutrals like the soft grey. Again, great for an accent like in a master bedroom. Definitely daring but modern and fun - perfect for a strong,single female on her own. Take a closer look at Benjamin Moore in Royal Flush 2076-20

7 -- Dark Teal. Not turquoise! This colour is bold but rich. Perfect for a man cave or man's office space. Add some dark wood furniture, leather sofa and club chairs and some photography or framed memorabilia and you have a classicmale space. Check out Behr's Almost Famous T11-6

8--Boho Brown. If your style is folklore chic and you love to collect and display beautifully handcrafted pieces, you need a wall colour that compliments but also can handle the supporting role. Farrow & Ball's London Clay 244 is rich and elegant but works so beautifully with hippie chic.

Well 2011 is here! What are your new year's resolutions? The new year is always a great time to refresh, rejuvenate and renew - so why not make some changes to your environment??

You don't need a lot of money or any to make some changes in your space to make it feel fresh and new just some creativity!

Try switching up how you place your pillows and throw blankets on your sofa . Keep pillows and blankets crisp and streamlined for a sleek look or try keeping it more laid-back by placing the pieces in a casual and relaxed way. If you have different size and colour/pattern pillows move them onto other furniture pieces that can really change your room.

You could try moving the furniture in a different placement. for example in the winter position the major pieces so they are facing the fireplace.

Change up your sofa and coffee table decor pieces with items you find around the house. Books, photos, decorative bowls, collectibles like shells etc...can really change the mood and ambiance of the space.

In the kitchen, add some natural elements like bamboo, flowers or even sticks (very low maintenance) on your kitchen island. A fruit bowl can also add colour and a welcoming feeling for guests.

Create a gallery in a hallway or up the stairs using family photos. Celebrity style - Kim Raver

We all see the fashion magazines plastered with images of celebrity style but what about their homes? Your personal style should be reflected in not just your clothing but your surroundings too!

Kim Raver (Grey's Anatomy and 24) has two gorgeous homes - one on the west coast and the other on the east coast. Each home reflects a side of her style and of the area.

The west coast home is modern but with some coziness and colour (see second set of images). I love how she softens up the concrete floors with a plush area rug. She also makes the living room so personal by adding an eclectic gallery of family photos. The addition of the large kitchen island encourages conversation and working together. "It's great because then people pitch in. Every one's chopping vegetables!" - she says.

The east coast house is more of a cottage style (see top images). The kitchen in light creams and bead board is cozy, cottage chic. The living room boasts a 300 year old fireplace! I have asked friends and family for some of their favourite holiday tips and tricks to make the season smooth, merry and bright.

- use ice cubes to water your natural tree and/or Christmas plants (less mess)

- battery operated candles. they give you the look, they are great for home with kids, no hot wax spills and they can be used over and over again

- edible centerpieces like nuts and fruit - simple to make, they are organically beautiful and no waste

- reduce, reuse and recycle your holiday gift bags

- live in a condo with strict rules and regulations? put your wreaths (using wreath hangers) on interior doors

- use stocking hangers instead of damaging your fireplace mantel with nails. check out bed, bath and beyond for initial stocking hangers by harvey lewis.

- always buy a few extra gifts and keep them on hand - there is always an unexpected person who thinks to get you something lovely for the holiday, it's nice to give back to them too

I recently staged a one bedroom with my team and much to my surprise the seller was disappointed with the end result. I spoke with the listing agent and he told me that the seller found the staging to be masculine looking and very modern, she was hoping for more traditional and cozy decor because that is what she likes. I explained to the agent (so he could relay the message to his seller) why certain looks and styles are used in specific properties.

Staging is not personalized decor it is a tool to help sell a property. A good stager will meet with an agent and discuss who the target market is - simply who will likely be most interested in this property. In this case, this listing is a one bedroom one bathroom unit in a large condo building, the pricing is great for someone who wants a downtown condo look about cannot afford the price tag. We determined it would most likely be a younger, single male. So with my team we selected furniture pieces that would appeal to a male crowd. We chose leather furniture and some darker wood pieces too. We were also careful to select pieces that worked with the scale and size of the floor plan, apartment sized furniture fits in the room but does not over stuff the area. A smart stager will also work with colours that 'pop' on film. We chose a lot of fun and funky artwork with lots of colour - which displays energy and fun! We also accessorized the space with pieces that demonstrate a chic and luxurious lifestyle with plush towels in the bathroom and martini glasses and voss water bottles in the kitchen. We created a chic and contemporary living space that looked like a downtown hot spot!

It is tough when a seller has lived in their space in a certain way and it takes time for many people to adjust to change. I have heard people say "I would have never placed my sofa there - I always thought of having it here". The way we present a home to sell is not the same as we live in a space and many sellers have a hard time making that distinction. Many sellers ask me "Does anyone actually live like this?" The answer is "No" but we are selling a fantasy, a dream of a certain lifestyle. If a buyer sees photos of your property online and they like it they will want to see it so your photos must make an incredible first impression after all those photos is what will book a showing. It's like going on a first date - are you always so pressed and perfect, maybe not but you don't want your date to know different...

In the end, the seller was really surprised to hear what all was involved in staging a home to sell for more money. She thought we just moved furniture and artwork in a property and left. And many people do. Now that she realizes what when into staging her place she sees and understands that staging to sell is a process and not just a crab shoot. She is happy with the number of showings and the positive feedback. Her property has been receiving rave reviews from agents and should be receiving an offer soon...

The holidays are a wonderful time of year! Everything is so festive, you get to gather with friends and family, eat, drink and be merry! But the holidays can also be filled with hassles, stress and expense - those are some of the reasons why my family and I have started celebrating the Christmas holidays away on a resort somewhere warm and sunny where we do not have to cook or clean, what a treat! But since we do not all have that option, here are some great time and stress savers to make your holidays more enjoyable....

1-- Share. a cookie exchange is a great way to get lots of variety and new cookies too.

2 -- Plan. Buy gifts ahead of time. A few years ago I found a beautiful wooden cheese plate with a knife I knew it would be perfect for my in-laws does it really matter that I purchased it in August?

3 -- Simple. Keep decor items simple. That doesn't mean scrimp but you don't have to have every corner of every room decorated in order to look festive.

4 -- Prepare. Do the cooking you can ahead of time and freeze it. Most cookies, soups and some appetizers freeze very well.

5 -- Host. Share the hosting duties by teaming up with a friend or family member to host one big party in stead of numerous ones. this will work out for your guests too since the holidays are such a busy time.

6 -- Organize. Plan ahead, get your calendar and figure out when to host, when to shop and when to bake. This can really help with getting everything done on time!

7 -- Easy. Have your kids make decorations. It's fun! It's personal and they can do that while you bake.

8 -- Help. If you are the host get some help with cooking, baking, cleaning etc...don't be shy to ask, most people offer anyway...

9 -- Give. Do a gift exchange instead of a gift for everyone, or keep it simple and give to the children in your family only. Keep a limit or a theme can be fun and perfect for work parties too.

The days of formal holiday parties seem to have gone by the wayside, keep your party simple with great friends, good food and drinks for everyone. If anyone is focusing on your lack of designer decor...they might not be worth inviting to future events....

Downsizing, downsizing, downsizing....we have been hearing this term A LOT lately and unfortunately many people see this as a negative experience but look at the positive side - it is a new beginning, a fresh start and a fun and exciting stage in life. The thought of downsizing can be daunting and overwhelming but here are some great ideas on how to approach this task with a plan!

1- List it! Not your house but your items, the ones you love and cannot live without. The others you could try selling or giving away to charity

2 - Think thin! Start thinning out your items about 3 months before the big more this will eliminate some stress

3 - Size it up! Compare the new room sizes to rooms in your current home, this will help with furniture planning and deciding what you can use in certain spaces. there aren't too many people who can use a floor plan to figure that out.

4 - Disconnect! Start in the areas that don't have a lot of sentimental connection such as the garage and the kitchen. You'll find a lot of 'extras' - who needs 10 mixing bowls and 6 spatulas? those are some easy places to start de-cluttering and you will feel like you are getting a lot done!

5 - It is better to give! Try donating items to local shelters, community centers, schools etc...you never know who might benefit from your old items and you may feel better about giving back instead of tossing out.

6 - Get a second opinion! Bring in neighbour, a friend or family member who will be honest with you about your items. Because you are so emotional invested and have been for so long it is tough to be ruthless. Ask for a second opinion on that set of dishes or the 1970's credenza.

7 - Plan ahead! Make a plan of how you want the furniture set up in the new home. this will help out the movers and yourself on the big day.

8 - Get organized! Colour code, label...find an organizational system that will help determine what goes where. Make sure everyone knows and understand the simple system.

With some pre-planning and help from family, neighbours and friends downsizing can be stress free and enjoyable. It is an exciting time and a fresh opportunity in another stage of your life - so have fun with it!

Yes, it is almost that time of year again...the holiday season is upon us! I just love this time of year when everything is decorated and everywhere looks so festive. So have you started your holiday decorating?

Not sure where to begin?

Start with a colour palette and if you don't think there is much of a choice beyond the traditional red, green and white, think again....

Holiday decor of the season has really changed. You can opt for the traditional colours but why not go metallic? Silver and gold look so elegant and timeless and paired with white or red, very sophisticated. Or maybe you prefer something fun and funky, try splashes of turquoise, fuchsia and orange - brighter is better! Or maybe a more natural and organic look is more your style, try natural tones and decor pieces straight from nature with edible elements such as cranberries. Are you more Hollywood chic? Even glamourous high heel stockings and animal print ornaments are readily available.

We all know the saying' go big or go home!' but I say "go big at home!'

What do I mean by that?

Big items in the home can really set the tone for your decor aesthetic. Here are some big ideas for your home:

- A big piece of art in a dining, living or bedroom really makes a statement even if it is not bright and colourful even a simple black/white piece can really be bold in a room.

- A big chair such as a chair and a half, is a perfect cozy spot for morning coffee or sexy and sophisticated with a glass of wine.

- A big and bold area rug in a living room! It is like art but on the floor

- Big fluffy pillows on a bed in the master or guest suite radiate luxury and chic comfort

- A big storage piece such as an armoir or credenza looks way more stylish (and is more practical) than having several smaller storage pieces in a space

- A big ottoman looks clean and modern and is super practical and multifunctional too

Even in a smaller space such as a condo or loft big items can work, just select the important ones like the chair or storage piece and don't over stuff the room. A few bigger items will really draw the eye in, too many big items will make any space feel tight and small. The bigger items should set the tone and then balance the room out with smaller details ...Big is Beautiful!

Staging for Furnished Rentals

So we all know that staging works for selling homes but does it work for rentals? The answer is simply - yes. Although you are assigning a job to your property - to create income - you are still "selling" the idea of someone living in this space whether for a week for a year. Any type of visual tool you use to sell or promote your product must look it's best and a rental is no exception. Since most renters and buyers are seeing the product online make sure it is presented properly.

My family and I are looking to rent a vacation home in Seattle for next August and I have started my search online. I cannot believe the extremes that I am seeing. Here are some do's and don'ts (all based on the online photos I have seen thus far)

- take photos with all of the lights on, although it may seem too bright it will work in the photos

- clean your home, we can see cluttered counter top and stains on film

- set the table, make the bed (like you would see in a hotel) and have flowers on the table - you want your home to look it's best!

- spend the money on professional photos, it will be worth it!

- spend some money on small updates like new hardware, linens, etc...

- keep decor neutral

Don't

- have loud or dark colours on the wall, you want to appeal to as many potential guests as possible

- have photos with friends and family partying in the home

- have your personal doll, sword or other collections on display

- have your pets in the photos, unless it is a pet friendly space, otherwise the renter will think of pet smells and stains, neither will help you rent

- have patterned furniture (cover it up with neutral slip covers) it looks dated

- use old photos, keep it current!

Remember that no matter the price point everyone wants to stay somewhere fabulous! Homes that look their best rent/sell faster and for more money plus if your rental looks great you will increase you potential for better quality renters and/or more repeat renters. Even for rentals, presentation is key!

Oh the centrepiece! The centrepiece used to be a large and bountiful bouquet of the finest flowers but now it has transformed into some many different possibilities. The centrepiece plays a role at any event or dinner party but make it reflective of you and your style, it does not have to be so stuffy and formal. Here are some great centrepiece ideas...

1 -- some very simple and organic, chic driftwood. it is very sculptural and easy to set up.

2 -- a simple string of tea lights - but not scented!

3 -- a bowl of fruit (i personally find one fruit say lemons is very contemporary but a variety or variety of fruit but in the same colour tones is very interesting.) try displaying this edible decor in a glass vase instead of a bowl to add volume to the table as well

4 -- root bowls are knotty and again very true to nature, fill them up with winter or fall deocr items such as christmas ornaments, pine cones, crannberries etc...

5 -- various small (nose gay like) bouquets in one type of flower is very chic and beautiful ribbon on the vase completes the look

6 -- lucky bamboo - easy, fun and inexpensive plus you can place it elsewhere in your home after the big party!

7 -- a glass bowl with water, river rock and floating candles

8 -- real cupcakes - in a tower or in a simple row, we are seeing this a lot at weddings

9 -- look for some interesting clear glass bowls and have gold fish - great conversation starter!

10 -- authentic seasonal decor - the fall is the best season for this - bring the outdoors in with mini pumpkins, gourds and the beautiful fall leaves

No matter the occasion a centrepiece really grounds the table - but it can be whatever you want, one single focal point or multiple but try and choose something that works with the scale of the table, something that works with the theme of the occasion and something that will not get in the way.

8 great ideas to pamper yourself in your own bathroom!

As a new mom I take any chance I get to treat myself. Days at the spa are a thing of the past so I transformed my own bathroom into a perfect getaway! You can too and here's how:

1 -- Get some new towels. White is classic but you could opt for colour too, it is really up to you. Find towels that are plush and cotton (better absorption). You do not have to spend a fortune on quality towels check out your department stores as they often have fabulous sales!

2 -- Bamboo bath accessories. They can make any bathroom look like an organic getaway. Bamboo has a natural warmth about it and a calming effect. Look for bamboo mats, waster basket, soap dispenser etc. but don't over do it on the bamboo...

3 -- A new shower curtain. Can really spruce up a tired bathroom. Look for something that works with your existing colour palette or something that evokes the mood you want to create.
Stick with something cotton, not vinyl, it looks more chic.

4 -- Furniture pieces. Yes, furniture! This is best in a large bathroom, for example a small side table can look very elegant next to a free standing tub and is a perfect spot for a glass of wine, candle, a book or the phone.

5 -- Functional decor. Use tall glass vases and fill them with bathroom items such as Epsom salts, soaps, cotton balls - it is useful, appropriate and looks stylish!

6 -- New hardware. Can transform a bathroom instantly! It is an easy fix and not expensive. This can make cabinetry look current too.

7 -- Plants. Add some natural elements to the space. Look for bamboo which does very well in rooms with little sunlight and damp spaces. If that is too much maintenance, add some tall vases with natural sticks. Anything natural adds calmness and serenity to a room.

8 -- Lighting. Change out the basic lighting and add some thing special. We kepth the pot lights but did a beautiful pair of glass pendant lamps over our vanity. Candles can also change the lighting and atmosphere in any bathroom (an easier and less expensive option).

If you cannot get to the spa, bring the spa to you.

Wow, it is hard to believe but we can all feel it - autumn is in the air! We are fortunate enough to experience the 4 seasons and the changes they bring, so embrace it in your decor. I know most of you are thinking cheesy but there are ways to make autumn or any seasonal decor cool and contemporary.

By keeping it simple - in a large minimalist bowl use items like gourds, apples or pinecones for a natural look.

My husband and I love to entertain but we did not want our guests to feel like they were visiting the Romper Room. Here are some simple style tips for any family friendly space.

Sectional sofa - perfect for any space. looks high style and chic but has lots of space for seating - my son loves to sit in the corner spot!

Flat screen TV installed on the wall (should be done by someone who knows what they are doing) this saves space, looks high end and is safe!

Hardwood even concrete flooring is fabulous and easy to clean! Add area rugs for texture, comfort and to define spaces!

Have a kids area. A small and colourful table with chairs - this gives the kids their own space too.

Vertical space is important. Install magazine racks for your and the kids stuff.

Floating cabinets and shelves can keep display items out of arms reach! It looks clean and purposeful too!

Make family photos cool with art collages on the wall - black and white are timeless and elegant!

Find discreet kids furniture, real wood always looks great and furniture that tucks under the dining table brings everyone closer at meal time.

Ottomans and cubes are fun and funky!

Plus they are safe - no sharp corners and some offer storage!

Use baskets and boxes when ever you can to hide kids toys but still have them accessible.

Having kids items around can make any space feel fun and youthful! Work with where you are in your life line and have fun! Design does not have to be serious!

Earn your Stripes - Decor project

Here's an easy and inexpensive art project to jazz up your bare walls.

You will need:

- picture frame

- scissors

- scotch tape

- bristol board (white is best but black works too)

- ribbon (various widths and colours)

1 Start by selecting coloured ribbon from any craft store. Various widths and colours too. Trying to work with existing fabrics? Bring in a sample and work off of it.

2 Lie frame face down remove the back and, make sure glass is clean and clear.

3 Lay ribbon down on the glass (horizontal or vertical - you decide). This project looks best if strips of ribbon are slightly layered.

4 Tape ribbon ion place at the ends and in the middle too, this prevents any gaps from showing

5 Now, use the backing of the frame on the bristol board, trace it and cut. The britol board will act as the background to your ribbon - the entire glass should not be covered in ribbon.

6 Place bristol board in frame - take a look - if you are happy seal it up with the backing.

7 Voila! Any easy yet very chic piece of art for your walls!

Well it is almost that time of year again and the countdown is one for parents across the globe. BACK TO SCHOOL!! Now is the perfect time to set up a space dedicated to homework and projects for your children. The kitchen table (or even the living room sofa) often end up being the go-to spots for homework completion but high activity areas are distracting and too busy to focus. Experts say that a dedicated space for homework is best for learning.

A child's workspace should be as simple and organized as possible but it also has to be appealing to that the child will want to spend time in there working. A great tip is to get your child involved in the design. Have them look at pictures in magazines and have them show you what they like and why. Look at functionality over style but add some unique touches to the space. some great ways to add style - frame your child's art, frame educational or inspiring posters, paint a chalkboard space on the wall, or have your child paint their own mural on a wall. Keep the organization simple with boxes or baskets - easy to access and put away. Make sure the furniture is of an appropriate size for your child and that the room is well lit.

You do not need a large space just one that is well planned out. If space is limited, get creative - place the desk under the top bunk. think vertical by placing shelves or even a hutch above the desk. Be sure to anchor everything to the wall so it is a safe space too.

Candles can really add to a room. They alter the mood in any space quickly and it is such an inexpensive transformation. Candles make the largest of spaces feel intimate and romantic.

So here are some things to remember when choosing and using candles -

1. Scented candles, if the scent is strong before it is lit, pass on it, as the scent becomes stronger when lit.

2. Do not use scented candles at a dinner party it can take away from the aroma of the delicious meal.

3. Put your candles in the fridge an hour before using them, they will take longer to burn.

4. Stick with similar colour tones so your use of candles looks intentional and not like you just grabbed every candle in the house during a power outage.

So you found a great house - you love the location, the price was right and now it's time to put your stamp on it, so now what? Take a look at the architecture of your home and that will give you a direction to move in - is it traditional? modern? sunny rooms? somber rooms? etc... Use those aspects of the home (or room) as a starting point, that will give your design some direction and intention - don't try to fit a square peg into a circular hole. When you fight the natural flow of a home (or room) it is obvious and rarely works.

Once you have really connected with the style of your home, next is too look at it empty and come up with a plan. Placement of furniture (existing or new) and figure out what goes where and possibly what you'll need to purchase or purge.

Think colour - don't get to specific but have an idea of the tones that will work in your home. I was in a beautiful chalet in the Laurentians which has the original wood beam ceilings and unfortunately the owners painted them a fire engine red because they wanted a funky colour - that funky colour would have worked better in a blanket, throw pillows or other accessories. The wood beams would have added some charm, warmth and maybe even a lofty feel.

So if you have a traditional home but like the look of modern what can you do? A LOT!! Take traditional shapes for example a wing back chair but upholster it in a pattern fabric. Add elements of sparkle like a funky mirror over the fireplace mantle. Don't go too over the top but splashes of modern in a traditional home is very chic and a truly personal style.

Last step is to shop, look around at all sorts of stores to create your one of a kind personalized look. Don't make your room or home look a like an image out of a catalogue but something from a stylish decor magazine.

When you work with the existing style of the home and mesh it with your personal taste you really end up with something fabulous and fun!

On this blog I have offered many suggestions on how to make better use of your space, getting organized and removing clutter. Recently, my husband and I tackled the daunting task of cleaning and organizing our garage (yikes!). We came across a lot of junk and a lot of old paint cans from the previous owners. We called a junk removal company hoping they could dispose of everything - they took everything except the paint cans. So where can you drop off paint cans, solvents, anti-freeze etc...? In this heat it is really tough to think about decorating the fireplace but soon enough you'll want to do nothing else. The fireplace is functional and fashionable whether it's gar or wood burning it is the focal point of any room - how can you really make this focal point hot?

Here are some great tips -

-- think about the overall look you want and decorating your fireplace accordingly, contemporary design is clean and traditional/formal more ornate.

-- think about the size of the room, that will help you determine how dramatic you can get.

Ways to make the fireplace 'pop':

-- add a beautiful tile for the surround and hearth or if the fireplace breast sticks out from the wall, maybe tile the whole wall. stone, ceramic or even glass tiles can make strong statements

-- paint the fireplace breast in a bold colour

--double vision - (best in a big dramatic room) the plaster fireplace mantle/surround you have around you fireplace can also be added to the breast, paint it out the whole area in one solid colour, the second mantle/surround acts as an extra large and bold frame for art or a mirror

Decorating the fireplace -

-- the mantle tends to get cluttered with family photos and trophies. keep the trophies in more personal spaces like bedroom shelves or the office. the photos should be framed and mounted on the wall in a montage above the fireplace (or the sofa)

-- candlesticks and vases are classic and clean. have them flanked on either side of the mantle and keep the sides a even.

-- the fireplace breast is the perfect spot for a large mirror, a fabulous vase with flowers or a beautiful piece of art.

The fireplace itself should be the focal point by adding to much colour or clutter you are turning it into an eye sore. Keep it clean and simple no matter your personal decor style!

Furniture face lift!

My husband and I spent our Canada day doing various chores around the house (sounds like fun right?). We had been putting off these chores for some time, with a new baby and busy work schedules we just did not have the time. One of the day's tasks was the empty the garage and find our patio set. Find it we did and boy it looked tired! We still set it up in the rear yard but it truly looked pathetic. Truth be told it was a hand me down from someone who purchased newer and nicer patio furniture for themselves - so it was already pretty used but we took it and have not really used it - maybe because it looked so awful.

We discussed buying a new set with all the sales on now but did not see anything that we really liked, so why spend the money. As a short term solution we decided to spray paint our current set, use it for the summer and if we wanted to, maybe purchase something new next spring.

We were not sure how the set would turn out but it had to be slightly better than how it looked currently. We went to the Home Improvement store and purchased our cans of Rust-Oleum spray paint. Our set looks brand new and spectacular. We were able to choose colours that worked with some other item we had in the yard and we even decided to paint the wicker chairs too! It did not take long and it was a fun project to do together at home.

give a touch of stylish yet classic decor by using stripes. stripes come in all sizes and styles ranging from big and bold to subtle and neutral. here are some ideas to add some stripes to your decor.

-- an area rug with big yet neutral toned stripes can add some personality to any space.

-- table linens with a subtle stripe is fresh and clean looking. this is a great look for the outdoor patio.

-- bold wallpaper is a current way to do an accent wall. this looks very dramatic in a powder room or master bedroom. use wallpaper in neutral tones so your space does not look like a circus big top!

-- an upholstered headboard in a pinstripe is classic and chic.

-- add a few stripes on fabric lamp shades. the stripe will look custom and can add some pop to your room.

OK you have decided it's time to re-decorate! you are so excited for the fresh start and the idea of something new, so how do you get started? Re-decorating can be intimidating but here are some get ideas to help you get going.

1 -- Once you have selected the room you are re-decorating, you need to think about your needs and lifestyle. Is this room for relaxation? entertaining? or multi-purpose? This will help you determine what needs to be in place in the space.

2 -- The fun part (at least for me) is the colour selection. Start by choosing your fabric first (so that could be your bed linens or maybe your sofa) select the paint, ceramic etc...from the fabric. If you commit to a paint colour first you will be looking for coordinating fabrics for years before you find the exact one for you! You can start with an inspiration colour, for example a light blue but be somewhat flexible when it comes to selecting the final hue.

3 -- Be sure to measure EVERYTHING! Area carpets, furniture, etc... to ensure every item will fit. Ask the experts for help.

4 -- Empty the entire room before you start moving pieces in the space. This will really help you decide if you like the placement of all the elements or not.

5 -- Think about practical elements too. Drapes should have 'black-out' lining if you like to sleep in or work shift work, this allows for better sleep. Lamps with fabric shades have better distribution of light. Mid-toned area rugs hide dirt and stains better than light toned ones.

Most of all, decorate for yourself, your needs and taste. Take inspiration from others but be true to yourself and create a space you know you'll love!

Hosting the Perfect Backyard BBQ

It's officially summer! The kids are out of school (soon) and it's time to make the most of the summer weather and the free time with friends and family.
Looking for some great ideas to host the perfect backyard BBQ?

Here are some easy tips for parties with guests of all ages:

Set the scene
Go with a seasonal palette - greens and yellows are fresh and fun! Look for flowers that are in bloom such as sunflowers, zinnias, and Gerber daisies. If the party will go into the evening hours be sure to have some kind of lighting (for mood and safety) look for tiki torches or solar lights in the garden or around the pool. don't forget about bug protection - have bug spray available for guests to use, have citronella candles on hand and spray the air and shrubs with Raid Yard Guard outdoor three hours before the party.
Try having some hurricanes candles on the table too. A white cotton table cloth is easy to wash but if you are hosting a party with children look for a vinyl one instead. Place the table close enough to the house so the host and guests have access to the kitchen and bathroom. Position the grill so the smoke is not blowing over the table but have it close enough so the chef feels included in the party.

Music
Music can really set the tone for the party but feel free to change it up as the party progresses. start off with some Bob Marley to set the mood, maybe then add some more up beat song selections that stick with the summer theme like "Cruel summer", "Hot, Hot, Hot", "Hot stuff" etc...As the evening becomes more mellow switch it up with some "Bossa Nova Brazil" or Smooth sounds of Sade.

Signature drink
Not necessary but it adds a sophistication to any party.
Try SUMMER MELON COOLERS
(serves 12)
Fill 1/2 gallon pitcher 1/3 full of vodka. Stir in puree of 1 honeydew melon (about 3 cups), 2 cups each of Midori liqueur and sprite and 1 cup of club soda. Serve over ice and garnish with skewered melon balls.

Offer non-alcoholic options as well, such as an equal mix of orange juice, cranberry juice and sparkling water.

For the kids, add some fruit in their drinks so they will feel just like the grown-ups.

best Backyard BBQ wines - Californian chardonnay (white) or Vieille Ferme (red).

What to serve
Have a selection of different burgers - beef, turkey and veggie.
Salads that don't necessarily require refrigeration such as a green, tomato or bean salads.
Appetizers such as crudites with hummus and tabbouleh.
Dessert go seasonal or simple - strawberry shortcake is a favourite and does not need a lot of prep time or if you have a fire pit, try s'mores

Remember
- to fill the propane tank so you don't run out mid-grilling.
- give guests about 3 weeks notice, summer time is busy for everyone (especially families)
- prep as much as you can before guests arrive, that way you can actually enjoy the party
- if you want to keep the evening casual, it's ok to go pot luck just plan with everyone first so you do not end up with 8 bean salads.
- use plastic cups and plates, they can be re-used but also accidents can happen and broken glass around little feet and grown up feet can be very dangerous.
- if children will be there, have something for them to do: sandbox, crafts, sports, games be sure to have them near by for proper parent supervision.

Luxurious Lullabyes

Maybe being a new mom (of two little ones under the age of 2 yrs) with little sleep has played a role in my latest focus - decor in the bedroom.

A luxurious bed is a simple and wonderful way to start and end your day. I just purchased some goose down pillows and do they ever make for a better night's sleep (even if it is only for a few hours at a time).

Here are some tips to create your perfect bed.

-- Mix it. Add some accent pillows to deliver a punch of visual interest. Look at different patterns or colours. Euro pillows (square pillows approx. a 26" square) are great for reading and lounging. Look for prints/colours that coordinate with your existing duvet cover.

-- Tuck it. fold down your duvet to reveal a tucked blanket (in winter and fall) or top/flat sheet (in spring and summer).

-- Fluff it. Keep an additional duvet (a lighter weight is recommended) at the foot of the bed, this too can be in a pattern or 'pop' colour, this also adds dimension and balance to your bed.

-- Layer it. Layering an outfit adds interest, dimension and richness. Layering a bed does the same. Add some texture with a knitted throw blanket or with a quilted coverlet at the foot of the bed.

-- Finish it. Unless it is a platform bed, a floor length skirt (aka dust ruffle) really completes the look of the luxurious bed.

-- Add it. Think about the other elements in your bedroom too, such as a bench to keep your blankets and other linens but also providing seating, a cozy area rug to keep your feet feeling toasty warm, an upholstered headboard adds even more glamour and richness to the bed, a chandelier is a unique and classy touch, and lighting - having a mix of task and overhead it best.

A good night's sleep is priceless but a good night's sleep in style is perfection!

It's nothing personal....

This week my team and I had a staging appointment in a great neighbourhood in the Parkwood Hills area, a well maintained 4 bedroom home with beautiful landscaping on a family-friendly street. The seller has decided to downsize into a condo now that her children have all grown up. she had lived there for years and I can only imagine the emotional attachment she has to this house. she is keen to sell but was very unsure of the staging process and why it was needed.

We arrived on Monday and toured the entire home and took some notes. The big issue in the house was the clutter - papers, family photographs, gifts from her children, and other 'collections'. We decided to start by clearing off the surfaces. We operate by the rule of 3 - no more than 3 items on a surface. The home still looks 'decorated' but not swallowed up by clutter and other items. We cleared off the fireplace mantle completely and added one simple vase with flowers. Clearing off the kitchen counter top and tucking away the small appliances made the space feel so much larger and cleaner too. And in the bedrooms and bathrooms, more of the same! What a difference!

We returned on Tuesday to add some flowers and a few splashes of colour so that the home was photo ready and much to our surprise - everything we had done to stage the home had been un-done! We had to start all over again. At least we had had some practise the day before (lol).

My assistants were somewhat confused and a bit frustrated, asking why would someone want their home staged only to un-do all of the stager's work? Well, as odd as it may seem many people, especially those who have been in the home for a significant amount of time, are offended or feel like you are criticizing them in some way. It is so important for the homeowner to understand what staging actually is and that it's nothing personal. We are there to help you sell your home for top dollar. In order to accomplish that, we sometimes have to remove (temporarily) the personal touches in the home and allow the potential buyers to mentally move-in.

The photographs are to take place this morning, I just hope the owner has not un-done all of the staging work. It is so important to have amazing photographs of your home - that is how you will draw in your buyers. It's nothing personal...just staging!

Chair-ity!

Chairs are a functional item in most rooms but this season we are going to be seeing a lot of different styles, looks and fabrics in and on chairs.

Some of my favourite looks in chairs are:

-- a mis-match set, so one look with your table maybe something from a rummage sale that looks a bit rough and add a modern looking set of chairs

-- go bright! have a neutral table with some different coloured chairs. this is a great look in an eat-in kitchen

-- have a dining set you want to update? try changing out the upholstery on the seats. i did this with my set, the seats were covered in a white vinyl and we replaced it with a funky animal print.

-- re-upholster you traditional wing back in a non-traditional print. the unexpected adds personality and unique flair to any room.

-- look for some industrial pieces to use as seating. an old work bench can be used at the front entry or in a bedroom.

-- the 'ghost' chair is a clear plastic chair that looks great in a bedroom, living room or dining room. it can make a smaller space look huge but still provides seating

An occasional chair is another way to add personality and flair in any room. Chairs can be a bit costly but think of them as an investment piece plus you want something well made so it lasts and it is comfortable.

How to Furnish a Room

Many people are intimidated at the idea of furnishing a room, this is probably one reason why staging is so successful - it takes the guess work away!

Furnishing a living room is like filling a wardrobe with clothing you might wear everyday. just like you would with clothing, start with the basics, so when selecting your furniture start with sofa(s), chairs, side and coffee tables. Make sure the items are classic in shape and colour and of course, take proportion into consideration. Now that you have your foundation pieces, you can start to dress your room up with details that add personality and interest.

When furnishing a room you also have to consider the room's most beautiful elements and deciding on how you want the room to flow. Is there a fireplace you'd like to be near while reading on the sofa or club chair? Or, is there a window with a fabulous view that you want to call attention to? These are called focal points. Be sure to choose pieces that you can arrange in a way to take advantage of the room's assets.

The most common pieces placed in a living room are:-a sofa, two arm chairs, two side tables with table lamps and a coffee table. how you arrange these pieces can add some uniqueness and personality to your space. Try an L-shape formation (the sofa facing the fireplace and two arm chairs side by side on one end of the sofa, end tables on either side of the sofa and the coffee table right in front of the sofa). the U-shape formation (sofa facing fireplace, coffee table right in front, side table with lamps on either side of the sofa and armchairs on each end of the sofa just facing each other). these are pretty typical formations. But here are some other suggestions:- Face to Face (place the sofa on the right side of the fireplace facing the window, and the two arm chairs side by side facing the sofa and coffee table in the middle.) Diagonal arrangement (use the U-shape formation but place the sofa on an angle and every other piece accordingly - this is a great way to take advantage of a window in the spring/summer and angle pieces in the direction of the fireplace in the fall/winter).

Dressing up the room is how we make the space ours. Adding those elements like colour, texture and shine. Adding decor pillows, throw blankets, artwork, mirrors, knick knacks, lamps, and other unique touches. Side tables and coffee tables are functional and fashionable but keep them clean from clutter, a rule of thumb no more than 3 pieces on a table. so a lamp, a small plant and a small dish is more than enough. If you want to display some of your collectibles this rule applies too - too many objects make a space cluttered an no one can see your beautiful pieces. The sofa is also a piece to present colour and texture. Try mixing different textures and patterns to create a warm and cozy area for guests and yourself. I personally like to start with a neutral foundation piece (cream, beige, camel,grey or espresso) are good tones to start with, they are classic and timeless and you can add any colour you wish.

Don't be intimidated to furnish your own space, it is fun! Afraid your place is too generic? That's where unique pieces you love, colour and texture come into play. Use books and magazine for inspiration. Take your time it does not have to be finished over night.

Great Garage Sales!!

It's that time of year - garage sales are everywhere! My mother-in-law is a big garage sale shopper and she always finds great deals - I never really understood how she did it, I always seemed to find junk. "It's best to start early," she says "that's where you find the best stuff at the best deals." I have heard this before but I always found them to be overwhelming, so much stuff and how to sort through it all. Many garage sales are not organized like some of the ones you see on TV shows like "Clean Sweep", so it is best to go in with a strategy or a plan of attack. Go with a list, know what you are looking for - furniture, clothing etc...but don't be too specific because this is a different kind of shopping. By narrowing your search you'll feel less stressed and overwhelmed.

Garage sales are great for unique finds such as lamps, artwork and even furniture but go in with some creativity and imagination. For example - you may find a table with great lines and the perfect size for your eat-in kitchen but the colour may not be your taste. Think about sanding off the finish and painting it. Can't find matching chairs? Purchase chairs from an inexpensive store that match or white garage sale hunting find mismatching chairs in the appropriate size and refinish them in a fun and fresh paint colour. Find an interesting lamp but the shade is dated? Switch up the shade.

If you are looking to add some special touches to your home, garage sales are a great starting point. You can really find some treasures that may need some polishing but you'll save a bundle and no one will have the same pieces that you will. It's a lot of fun too!

Conquering kid clutter

If you have children or know anyone with children you know that kids come with a lot of baggage. Not the emotional kind but just things - clothing, toys, blankets, books, diapers, wipes, and other equipment like things needed for their hobbies.

Where can you put it all? Well, it can be a difficult task but getting your kids organized will really pay off in the end. Kids who are organized tend to do better in school, they will feel better in their space and you will feel better about their rooms too. It's never too early to start organizing the kids' rooms and for families with older children get your little ones involved in the process.

Look for storage solutions, try stores such as IKEA http://www.ikea.ca/ and stay Organized http://www.stayorganized.com/retail/ They have great ideas for any storage issues for any room. But first know what your issues are : over flowing dressers? Try adding an armoire or adding hanging organizers in the closet for toys, clothes and/or costumes. Everything is everywhere? Try creating zones. Have a desk and necessary study items in one area, add a mirror and small table with baskets for play make up and hair accessories in another area and keep a small square shaped bookcase for books and it could also double as a bed side table just add a lamp on top.

In kids' rooms don't be afraid to use big or adult size furniture - you'll have more room for everything. Sometimes bigger is better, as a large dresser could replace two small ones. Often children's furniture is not as well made (as it is not designed with longevity in mind) and it can be costly. Find furniture in a neutral tone and basic design and it could last quite a while.

What about the closet? Make it kid friendly by adding reachable bars, hooks and shelves. Use the higher space for seasonal items like extra blankets, sport equipment and snowsuits. Use clear plastic (and cheap) dressers for inside the closet. On the shelves you can keep items in boxes such as hats, scarves etc...

What about the other areas where the kid clutter exists?

The front hall is a hot zone for kids. They come home from school and drop everything - bags, books and jackets. What to do? A coat rack or coat hooks are a good idea. Consider getting a cabinet or bench in the front hall that has either drawers or baskets and assign one to each child. Show them the routine and have them practice. If you have additional drawers or baskets use them for storing seasonal items like mitts and hats.

The kitchen is a very busy space for families. Try adding an in-box in your kitchen this can help keep all of the field trip and invitations organized. The kids drop their forms and invites in the in-box and once you have had the chance to respond or fill them out they can be placed in the kids' drawers or baskets to bring back to school. If you have a desk in the kitchen a bulletin board with a family calendar is also a great idea to keep all activities straight.

Kids do not have to cramp your style. They just add extra pieces to the puzzle. Getting everyone organized will take time in the beginning but in the end it will be worth it.

Trend to watch for in flooring

We are seeing hardwood flooring many spaces and people are loving the look and the maintenance. They look clean and they are easy too clean. They suit all decor styles from modern to traditional but they are also extremely practical for anyone with pets and/or allergies.

So what are the hardwood flooring trends to watch for?

Wire brushed finish. this looks especially great in a wider plank but it really shows of the grain of the wood. It's very true to nature but again, works with many looks. It gives a bit more of a rustic feel which works in a country home setting or an artist's loft.

Grey hardwood. This is very popular in Europe right now. Trying to imagine what this looks like? think of weathered cedar boards but on the floor. Grey tones are still very popular and this flooring selection is no exception.

Everyone needs an escape or a getaway, even a few days can do wonders for the body, mind and soul. So what is it about a hotel that is so relaxing? I can be anywhere in the world and as long as my room has the following elements, I am in 'heaven'. Follow these tips to bring a little hotel chic into your everyday life, because we all need an escape.

Reduce the clutter - clear off the surfaces or at least have baskets or boxes for the items you need access to. Depending on your budget you can add cabinetry or shelving units or simple storage solutions. Keeping clutter to a minimum creates a stress free environment.

Create visual interest - make your space less utilitarian and more pleasing by adding plants or flowers. Texture with blankets and/or pillows. Vases with river stone and grass, is easy to maintain, and keeps a calm atmosphere. Candles add to the ambiance as well, just keep the accessories minimal.

Clean, clean, clean - whether it is the bathroom or your bedroom be sure to dust the surfaces, make the bed, clean any reflective surfaces, and vacuum the floors. If your space is kept clean you will feel like a guest every time you enter the room.

Lighting - layering your lighting is always a good idea. Remember to have task lighting for reading (by the bed is best), candles can create a relaxing and soft light and pot lights can fill the space with light. A dimmer switch is also a great and easy idea to create a calm and serene lightning plan.

Linens - changing your bed linens regularly keeps them clean and maintained plus you get that hotel feel with crisp sheets. Investing in higher quality bed sheets really makes a difference. The higher the thread count, the softer the sheet. This is something I recommend all couples to put on their bridal registry. stay with neutral colours, again this adds to the soothing mood you wish to create in your hotel chic space.

*Beautiful artwork or photography that you love - maybe something personal like wedding photos or portraits

What's in your fridge?

Storage containers have come a long way and they come in all shapes and sizes. There are even stylish storage containers to keep food fresh and fabulous.

Where to start?

Begin by taking everything out. Toss out leftovers and expired products. Start by grouping like-sized items together and re-arrange the height of the shelves accordingly. A space saving tip: decant bulky juice cartons into clear pitchers.

Access is key. Items that are left at the back of the fridge tend to stay there and we forget about them. Look for a plastic (easy to clean) lazy Susan to keep your small jars, be sure the lazy Susan has a lip around it to ensure items to do not fall off. This is perfect for hot sauces, mustard and other specialty condiments.

Re-purpose your crisper drawers. I have found that by keeping pre-cut veggies and fruit in produce-friendly containers, we eat healthier. When you open your fridge having the healthy foods visible and accessible makes sense, so why not use the crisper for other items such as food and drink you don't want to see tight away when hunger strikes like chocolate and pop.

Having an organized fridge will ensure you have less waste because everything is used. It is also easier to find out what you need for your next grocery run.

A place for everything - stylish storage solutions

Everybody faces storage challenges. There are so many stylish storage solutions that are both functional and fashionable.

Book shelves - are a great way to store books or magazines, of course, but also display collections and other decor piece but they also act as a graphic back drop for the entire space. Other storage solutions to be used in a book case - try vintage cans to store bills and letters, a decorative clay pot could store matches and old milk bottles can keep spare change. Try finding storage containers that have personality and add to the style of the room.

Coat/hat racks - are perfect in mudrooms and front foyers, they are great for guests or everyday use. Add a bench under the rack which can not only act as seating but also storage for hats, mitts and other seasonal items.

Clear containers - glass or plastic are great for storing anything in any room. In an office, store supplies in them and leave them on a shelf. In a kitchen, store your cookies, coffee, tea, pasta and/or cereal in clear containers. Glass containers make for easy storage, easy to find items and add pops of colour.

Stackable bins - are great in the garage or storage area in the basement. Perfect for seasonal items such as decor pieces or clothing. Be sure to label them to make finding what you need easier.

Wicker baskets - are great for kid's rooms, rec. rooms and bathrooms. They looks great, they are made from natural materials and they come in all sizes. They are a great tool to teach children where to put their toys. They also make items accessible put still tidy.

Having a special place for the things you need most saves time. As with every aspect of design, you can approach creating storage with personal flair. Bringing in your sense of colour, texture, style and materials - as well as your own pieces - will add to the overall appearance of the room.

Inexpensive items like vintage canisters and antique boxes can be used as ordinary storage items but are more visually appealing and dynamic. If an object catches your eye, think about its decorative and storage potential.

Favourite things - chalkboard paint

Chalkboard paint has been on the market for a while but I recently used it in my own home during our renovation this fall and I just love it!

When we discovered that our current kitchen cabinet had been discontinued we were stuck on what to do for doors on our new pantry.

We decided to re-create cabinets in the same design as our current kitchen and use the same hardware but we painted the cabinet/pantry doors with chalkboard paint. It's a large surface where we keep our grocery list, to-do list and our weekly calendar. It is so useful and user-friendly. I know that when my children are older they will love drawing on the chalkboard while we are busy making dinner. It was easy and inexpensive. So what else can you do with chalkboard paint?

- a great gift idea is to paint flower pots with chalkboard paint and using chalk, write a message.

- use the paint on glass jars for the kitchen and label the container with chalk. an easy but fun way to create a cookie jar or canisters of tea and/or coffee.

- re-vamp an old coffee table by re-finishing the surface in chalkboard paint. keep a bowl of chalk near by and the keep it in the family room, your kids and their friends will love this!

- a wall or just a framed space on a wall, perfect for the kitchen or family room for keeping lists or just for drawing.

- a very creative backsplash. can't afford tile? a chalkboard backsplash is unique and easy.

Chalkboard paint now comes in a sorts of colours, so it's even more fun!

If you are looking for a unique piece or maybe just a little something to liven up a room, try the clearance aisle.

I know it's a lot of junk, right? Wrong. Often the clearance aisle (in many cases) consists of items that were once floor models, items from 'last season' and pieces that have been on the show room floor for too long. Yes, there will be some damaged goods but take a close look before you buy you can find some really great deals.

Just last week at Home Sense, I purchased a beautiful, crochet-knit blanket in a sage green for $3.00. This week, I purchased some Italian glass vases for under $20.00

You can find art pieces and even furniture at IKEA. Their floor models always end up in the "as-is" section. A few weeks ago, they had a great chrome and glass kitchen table set with 4 chairs for under $100 and in great condition.

Clearance, sale or as-is shopping can be like a fun treasure hunt, you just don't know what you'll find. It is also great for anyone on a tight budget or shopping for your first home.

Brighten up your bathroom without blowing the bank

We have all heard how kitchens and bathrooms are the hot spots in your home. These are the rooms that can get you top dollar when it is time to sell. But looking around at bathroom specialty showrooms can be overwhelming, so many choices and the price to do to a bathroom reno can spin out of control. So is there a way to brighten up the bathroom and not blow your budget? Of course. check out these ideas:

a -- Change up your hardware. A simple and easy makeover but wow it can really transform a room.

b -- Paint. Depending on what look you want to achieve will depend on your colour choice. If you LOVE colour, I recommend drama in a powder room but softer in an ensuite or main bath.

c -- New mirror. Adding a 'custom' mirror looks expensive and sends the message ' this home was loved and cared for' to potential purchasers. Look for a mirror with a unique frame, again, a special touch that you might not see in other homes.

d -- New towels etc.... Get some fresh guest towels, new soap dispensers, a small plant (real or fake) and perhaps, a piece of art. This can really spruce up a boring bathroom and won't cost much at all. I like classic white towels, very chic and timeless. A black and white photo is also a timeless piece that works with all colour palettes. This is a great idea to follow if you are looking to sell.

e -- New shower curtain. Get rid of the old and in the with new and don't forget to replace the plastic liner, too. A mouldy shower liner and/or curtain is just gross. A new curtain adds some freshness to the room.

f -- Change out your faucets, shower head, towel bar and toilet paper bar. Adding these shiny, new pieces can really change up your room and make it sparkle! Most hardware stores offer a package so all the items match. A mis-match of hardware in the bathroom looks like you went and bought everything at a discount, take the time to find items in the same finish and look.

Serious about selling?

Be sure to put extra time into minor repairs. Fix the leaky faucet, cracked tiles, touch up paint and remove the mould and mildew. These small details are not insignificant and do matter. Putting time and effort into making your home 'picture perfect' will not go unseen and the offers you receive on your home will reflect that.
